Thursday Night at the Races
The Cruzbike Virtual Race Team was at it again in the World Tactical Racing League Team Time Trials on Thursday night. If you think the title is a mouthful, you should have seen the action!
CVRT is known for being unpredictable, and last night was no different. Those used to seeing the usual two-team showdown—High Speed vs. Low Drag—were in for a surprise when a third team, the Silvio Sticky Bottles, entered the 400-plus team event. Their presence might have forever changed the race dynamics.
The race began with Sticky Bottles rolling out first, followed three minutes later by Low Drag, and seven minutes after that by a high-adrenaline-infused High Speed. Normally, Low Drag plays the role of the hunted, but now they were also the hunters. The old Serengeti tactic—waiting for High Speed and pouncing on a straggler—was no longer an option.
Sticky Bottles may have been new, but their riders weren’t rookies. With 8K to go, Low Drag caught them—but could they break away? Over the radio, the question was asked: Can any Stickies hang on? Silence. Surely someone could try! Finally, an unconvincing voice responded, I’d like to try… And the plan was born.
Greg Gross would move to the back of his team, and as Low Drag came through, a teammate would give one last effort, acting as Greg’s wingman until he could stabilize at Low Drag’s blistering pace. It worked. Greg latched onto Low Drag, and the rest of Sticky Bottles regrouped.
Then, a new threat appeared—High Speed was closing fast. With 5K to go, they were just 2.5 minutes behind Sticky Bottles, flying at over 40 km/h.
Up the road, Low Drag was trying everything to shake Greg loose, but nothing worked. His presence was throwing their rhythm off and adding to their fatigue. He was not going anywhere. Meanwhile, High Speed was bearing down, and Sticky Bottles was still biting at their heels.
What’s a team to do?
Captain Hawk made the call: Abandon ship! Half the team would stay back to support struggling riders, while Hawk and Rick would haul buggy and save their skins.
The final 500 meters were chaos—a blur of confusion, exhilaration, and exhaustion. Low Drag, Sticky Bottles, and the roaring High Speed squad were all mixed together in the fray.
When the dust settled:
Rick Mueller (Low Drag) took the win by a large margin.
Greg Gross (Sticky Bottles) pulled off an incredible second-place finish, sealing the team victory for Sticky Bottles.
Otto (High Speed) stormed through just five seconds later, leading his team right behind him.
Final team standings:
Sticky Bottles – Champions of the night!
Low Drag – Gave it everything they had.
High Speed – Always fighting the odds but never backing down.
Special mention to our High Speeders, good sports who race week after week knowing the deck is unfairly stacked against them.
It’s hard, and it’s fun—and we’ve got room on every team. Come join us!
