V20 Pivot bolt and clamp

Hi, after setting up my new V20 frameset and riding for a while, I am noticing flex and movement under power, as well as some creaking. I have traced this to the pivot clamp and am wondering if anyone has any tips to prevent this happening. I cannot find any torque settings for this clamp so I am afraid of over tightening. Please help… thanks in advance, Ben

I went through this too--the creaking/clicking sound at this clamp. I initially solved it by sliding super thin mylar washers in between the inside edge of the boom clamp and the outside edge of the steerer tube clamp. The process is a little fussy, but it took care of the noise. Now what I do is tape and trim a layer of yellow tubeless rim tape along the inside surface of the boom clamp. A sharp razor blade/exacto knife/utility blade will trim it to an exact fit, and since it is stuck in place, it is easier to install than loose mylar washers. And again, the noise is gone. I hope this helps.

Does this mean that there is still sideways movement though? I was thinking that the Mylar washers is the sort of solution I was thinking of as this would prevent the 1-2mm of movement at the clamp that will happen under power or at least cushion it. I am not clear how the tubeless tape around the inside of the clamp stops the sideways movement?

Hmmm... I have never had actual sideways movement. I have noticed a small amount of flex between the clamp and bb shell during hard efforts, but that is different than what you describe. On my S30 and V20, the clamp-to-clamp interface is absolutely flush and free of play. Maybe a picture of what you are seeing would help?

There should be a total of 3 washers in that connection - all on the outsides: two on the sleeve and one on the bolt side. That will allow the clamp to pinch just the right amount to tighten so there should be no movement there. I also recommend a bit of grease on the sleeve.

Thanks, I’m going to strip the front end down, clean, grease and torque it back up again.

Robert, I should've watched your assembly video more than once. I had the two washers on the bolt side and one on the sleeve side. I have greased and re-mounted the correct way. Now I will have to wait for the rains to subside to give it a test. Thanks again.

I asked @Robert Holler this question a few years ago for my V20. He told me the Pivot Clamp bolt should be torqued to 12 Nm and the Boom Clamp torqued to 10 Nm.

Robert, if this has changed or I misunderstood, please let us know.
