Velow Plugs to replace rim tape

Has anyone used Velow plugs (32 off weigh 4.22 gms) to replace rime tape (16 gms) to save weight, and more importantly for me to make installing tyres easier, as the rim well diameter should be smaller and on 19 mm wide (external) rims there is no tape on the tyre landing zone.

They work just fine, but I can't say whether or not they make tire fitting easier or not. I've never had a problem with plugs or tape in that regard. I guess technically they should be easier but in practice it really depends on the tire bead. I've had some tires that were easy and some that were more difficult, even for the same model tire.
