Vendetta 1.5 fenders (mudguards)

My newly acquired Vendetta 1.5 is to be my daily driver to work (23km), and if I am to fully replace the heavy conversion, I need fenders to deal with the wet days. With fenders and a fairing, my heavy cruz conversion is great even in a downpour!

I found that the SKS raceblade long fenders provide an excellent, quickly removable or mountable (2minutes, no tools) fender solution for my V 1.5 with 23mm tires.

I mounted the front fender backwards to provide coverage around to the bottom bracket bridge, keeping drivetrain and shoes dry. I haven't tested it in the wet yet. I expect some spray on the bottom of the seat but that won't get me or my clothes wet. If I have any bags strapped to the rear of the seat (not increasing frontal area), they might get wet, but that's ok. The main thing I hate about wet weather riding is the wheel spray, wet shoes and the need to wear rain pants.

I'm a bit loath to mount the fairing from my other bike permanently on the V. A quick mounting solution would be better so that I can just put it on for wet days.

Fairing mounts

Hi Hamish -

Re your fairing, see my post from a couple of months ago in the Quest forum "New homemade fairing for Quest". I have exactly the same situation as you, using the bike to commute daily in all weather, and hating wet shoes. I suspect that my fairing and mounts are a lot lighter than yours; I'd send detailed specs if you want.

I will be getting a V soon, and will be commuting daily (rain or shine, hot or cold), and would love to see if I could get one installed before the cold weather sets in.
I don't really mind riding in the rain, except for the wet shoes. But it would be nice to have dry shoes and keep most of the water off of the drivetrain.

FENDERS FOR SILVIO OR VENDETTA

I mounted CRUD road racer plastic fenders on my Silvio 2. They are good for 700x23 tires, for a larger tire they might be too tight.

Hi larry,
No fairing on the v yet. i sold my conversion and its windwrap fairing but was thinking that if i get other house projects done i might attempt a skin on wood frame fairing. As per jim gerwing's experience, knee height and forward visibility are key issues when laid back as far as a v.

they fit but...

Ok so they fit the 700x25 but just barely. My tolerances look to be about the same as Ivan's under the brakes. Probably will need to run the 25's at 90psi but that's fine they are tubeless. The tight spot as always on the silvio is under the brakes. I'll get a couple rides in and we will see how they settle in. Like most things "Bike" they will behave best at speed in all likelihood.

Coincidence! I just tried

Coincidence! I just tried changing my 23c tyres to a set of GP4000s 25c tyres on my bike. They touch my crud RoadRacer fenders in certain places when inflated to 100psi. I took them off without playing with them further cos the clearances are really very tight. Similar to Ratz, it is tightest for me under my brake calipers. The fact that my rims are narrow 19mm perhaps makes the 25c tyres even more bulbous?

Anyway, Ratz how does your 25c compare to your 23c? I wanted to try but would have to also remove my fenders and now isn't a good time.

Test Ride completed

Ok so as expected once the bike is rolling the fenders worked just fine they float on the air flowing over the tires. I had the tires at 90psi which is the Minimum for these tubeless tires but perfectly rideable. Usually run them between 95 and 100; so a minor change. Did 15 miles without issue. I target a much puddle full of goopy sand on purpose. I immediately pickup up a tune of crud in between the tires and the fenders. It was noisy but not messy. 100 yard latter all the mud had been flush from the fenders and the bike returned to silent running. Got home no mess to clean up at all.

The front tire is the tight one. The SRAM force brakes give very little clearance. I had to loose the break mount and make sure it was shifted all the way up.

Photos of my setup with 25c look identical to your photos Ivan (save me a ton of time because the instructions are lame). I'm pretty sure that min 25c look like your 23c is because my 25c tubeless and for that the rims are wider and tire sets up shorter wider than 23c with tubes do. When we built the bikes I tried a 25c tubed tire on a much older narrower rim (for use on the trainer) and it did not fit on the Silvio it would rub the brake every so slightly.

The dimensions on the rim are 23mm outer, 17.5mm inner width, versus the old wheels which are 19mm out and 16mm inner.

If I recall Aero 420s are 19/16 as well which is going to give a tall tire with a 25c installed.
