Twas a good start ,but didn't
Twas a good start ,but didn't quite finiish that thread. Something about having to rush off do some audax brevets.
And more importantly I'm still experimenting with components , so its a work in progress.
But the thread is not forgotten. Just yesterday I put a Rohloff into the front forkks to see if it fits. And it does !
The Rohloff is naked, its not attached to a rim so it was a very early trial fit. If someone wants to see what this
Preliminary fit looks like can take some photos on the weekend.
The are a few reasons for trying the Rohloff . First it would give me more lower range. I don't want to preempt too much
but there some hilly brevets coming up. Some back of envelope calculations suggest I might be able to have the equivalent
of a 22 ring at the front but come down in the big chainring from the fifty on the triple to about the equivalent of a 44 with the rohloff.
And a rohloff means losing the weight of 2 chainrings at the front, no need for a front derailleur, no need for a left hand brifter, just a brake
handle.
So I would gain some and lose some. Now whilst a 22 tooth chainring sounds like a good thing for those really steep hills, the V feels better
when applying a bit of force on the pedals rather than all out spinning.and on 22 I would be spinning. Still I feell like I want to try it out and see how it goes.
One tricky bit with the rohloff is finding a way of fitting the gear shifter on the woodchipper handlebar and finding a tidy way of routing the cables from the shifter. The shifter mechanism is bit 1960's in terms of design.
Anyway I'm really looking forward to this trial and will post some photos as soon as I've got something up and running.
