Videos from the road

Flats can be fun.

We shot a bunch of video to make a birthday video for our daughter; it was too tempting to use the "scrap" footage to make another video for fun. It should be noted that the rider NOT pulling the trailer thought it would be fun to go 50 miles.

Notice all the tiny stop signs? Yeah this is the Millionaire lake district where every MUP/driveway intersection has a stop sign. Nice of them to let us ride through their neighborhoods of deserted used "1 time a month" homes. Me thinks the stop signs are rotated 90 degrees the wrong direction.

Final version

And the actual Birthday video did get finished finally

The other videos (made and edit on the iphone) were slowed down to 1/3 speed because of the low res. This one runs as full speed edited on real computer; better to watch in HD unless you want to get a shaky cam headache.

Now we have all winter to figure out some sort of steady cam to mount on the bikes for next year.

And it's a wrap

Not all the bikes are in storage, but it's getting close.
So it was time to wrap up the year with some final videos

Applause!!! Applause!!! Applause!!!

Fantastic videos Bob. The nightrider video is pretty cool and the second summer video is epic, would make a good Cruzbike commercial. I liked how you put the whole year into making the epic summer video. Hard to believe it all went so fast.

Shoot 95% more than you need

Thanks Rick; I find making the video is a fun way to review the season. We don't really plan these things we just shoot ALOT of photos and videos; too many is better than too few. We make the kids make video now and then; teaches them that sometimes you don't have "the shoot" you need so make sure you take far more than you need when you have the camera in your hand. Example there's not a a single shot of the 10 year old boy; he's camera adverse, too big for the trailer and too young to hang on the 40 mile rides. How'd I miss that, no clue but we did.

Edit: I hear all the time that music is overvalued but it's darn hard to find open source music that actually good for a full three minutes; 20 sec no problem; a good 3 minute cut is still hard.

You can tell the difference right away when you put the music it was edited too back in place wiht a hirez cut.

I agree with you Bob, take

I agree with you Bob, take many pictures, one or two many be that extra special photo along your journey that has much tell.

I've been looking into a way to have a camera handy that can be used on the fly while riding. The other day (Sunday), I connected a neck strap on my HTC phone, and tried to take pictures on the fly. The idea failed, at least my setup failed. Trying to work a phone camera with one hand, look at the screen, take one finger and hit the little camera icon - and then not wreck. I took a ton of pictures, or so I thought. Half the time the camera did not fire or would not turn on, or would mysteriously change to a selfy. Then it would slide of my chest and dangle to the side. Theres got to be a better idea.

Hey, I thought you had five girls. The middle guy seems to be stuck in that middle-age, but you know it won't be long before he says "dad, can't I borrow the keys to the Vendetta?"

Here is the best one out of the group from Sundays ride:

The solution probably going

The solution probably going to be steal video stills from rideye. Today's update says they will be shipping within 45 days or so.

I just got a Garmin VIRB

I just got a Garmin VIRB elite. Has 64GB micro card and can hold about 6 hours of HD video.
Lost of mounting options available, and you can build your own too.
I mounted mine on the boom past my feet so you don't see them going past in the video.
You can turn it on or off from the Garmin head unit.
Garmin's VIRB edit program is also really cool.
It will add a dashboard for you and include, map, power, altitude, pulse, speed, or about any other BT or ANT+ signal you can collect.
It is very cool.
I will post one soon when I get a chance. (Leaving for Honduras on a 2 weeks mission trip late Tuesday (tomorrow), so I might not get around to it until early Nov.)

I thought about that. But it

I thought about that. But it will be limited. I like to see how the light comes into the lens, it can really screw up a great photo that even Photoshop can't fix. I've kinda tried the concept with the GoPro Hero, but mounting was a concern. After owning a Hero for a few years now, I hate it.

I certainly like the idea of the Rideye for video and it's ability to be constantly rolling, but not so much for stills. I would like to have more control of camera and without it being mounted. It's easy enough to ride the Cruzbikes one handed, but operating function on a camera makes it a little more complex. It seems there should be a solution somewhere to be found.

Sounds cool Larry. So you

Sounds cool Larry. So you first post will be a of a Vendetta "skating" down the road?

I renamed this thread to videos from the road since that's what it's evolved into.

Rick last I check the wife was a girl so that's 5 girls, 2 boys. We tend to get overruled a lot. :)

Yeah, boys against the girls?

Yeah, boys against the girls? You guys will never win. As a matter of fact, "even if" you guys out numbered the girls, you guys will still be on the loosing team

Okay I will have to take a look that "flat lander" video footage to see if I can detect a mountain.

Nice video. Up and down. Los

Nice video. Up and down. Los of car traffic, but I love the rollers. I have very little of that type of riding around here.

I liked the part seeing some fast pedaling with the dog chasing you. I can relate to that one.

Rolling along.

So this was suppose to be a nice short video to explain our milk roads; up and down valley hills, and some fall colors. Mostly because Rick confused MN with flat landers.
shades_smile.gif
At least that's what it was suppose to be when I left the house. A detour, a dog, and a damaged rider and it turn out to be much different.

Shot in hyper lapse in portrait mode and then cropped to get the feet out of the frame; unless I wanted them.

Bob,
Just watched your

Bob,
Just watched your Rolling the Rollers Bob. Great video. Great Ride.
I don't have much like that here in the mountains of NC.
Now, I'll definitely have to make a ride & video of Assault on Mount Mitchell and post it for you to see.
Or..early morning (darkness to light) ride to work in lots of traffic on the 5-lane highways I ride.. :)
We can now all like vicarisouly thorugh each other's videos.!

Rick,
You need to do one of your assent and descent to and from Shasta dam. That would be cool too!

very nice

Usually I can't be bothered to watch 6 min off the front of a bike but this was different.

The commentary REALLY made this video Bob.

Thanks for sharing.

Maybe now I'll try something similar - minus the dog and the wreck - gotta have the commentary.

Larry, descent from Shasta Dam at speed is too dangerous . The road is used by dirtbikes and ATV's, it's allowed and legal in this area. What a very low percent of them do is, spray gravel up on to the asphalt road surface (it's like marbles) purposely. So on the descent you have to weave in and out of the loose gravel, especially on the corners or you are going down. I know a guys that went down and spent a week in the hospital and lost partial sight out of one eye. It's a shame, because the road surface is so smooth. Now the other side is so rough, and chopped up that your teeth are chattering and your hands go numb form the vibration. But we do have some other fine long fast descents around here, I would love to get video.

Looking forward to seeing some of your videos Larry, especially from the ride you did a week or 2 ago.

Have a good time in Honduras!!

Would da could of

The disappointing part of that ride was the Cop Block (chemical spill apparently up the road). Going straight from that point it's 2 miles down hill at 30+ mph; then snaky woods through 5 river valleys; that's where all the fall color canopy is and all the short steep climbs up and down at 8-12%, that's what I went out to shoot. I was about 1/2 mile from connecting with the bottom of the first descent when I crashed and turned around. ? Good thing I didn't push it; wound up sleeping most of today away healing. Odd part is that road suck going south but going north it's a lot safer. Figures it's 1 of only 2 really bad roads around here. In the end that was still 1000ft of climbing in that video. One section of the ride from the crash to the climb is missing but that was all down hill to the river while I composed myself. The part that always amazes me is how small the hills look on film.

I decided to make the video using the footage I had since I might not get another chance before the snow thanks to injury and travel plans. I agree Lieft most video should be under 3 minutes or the length of the song. If you go longer you have to put text on the screen every 10-20secs. If the section of video is without comments is longer than 10 seconds then it needs to be interesting on its own without comments. Usually it's about 15 secs between 4 second comments. If you have footage and nothing to say about it for 20secs you cut it out and put a transition. If I had got the ride I wanted 50-75% of that foot would have been on the cutting room floor and the in the trees stuff would have been the order of the day. This was far too urban, I don't really spend much time near anything but the cows, farms, and rivers. I can ride the lake area but the roads are narrow and the traffic is nasty heavy so I usually avoid it.

When it comes to keeping it interesting, It also really helps to lay in sound effects. All of the traffic noise is just stock sound effect of traffic laid out so they align with the footage. For a video like this you lay that in as a bed track at 25%-35% and put the music on top of that at 45%. For the fun videos we did; I record the highway by our house, looped it, and then laid that as a 12% bed; you don't notice it in the fun video (summer cruz) unless it's not there; and then it feels like something is missing. That part takes about 10 minutes to do and it really really makes the video more watchable.

In the old days I would have to do this stuff in Final-cut and it would take about 4-5 hours, but iMovie is so simple but empowered that now you can crank these out in about 45-60 minutes if your not a perfectionist 2 hours if you are. And then there is the mobile tech, the two NightRider videos I did completely on the iphone; while watching football that was simple but putzy slow.

5 Lanes, Larry? yikes not for me. We aren't allowed to ride bike on divided highways around here unless there is no other way through. This ride just happens to be a stretch right at the end of the 4 lanes and before the start of the next section. The Cop basically said go that way; handed me a card, and told me if I got a pulled over to tell them I was sent that way by him. Nice jesture but I probably should have doubled back and gone the other way on the milk roads.

Personally I think the Silvio dumped me on purpose because she wants me to buy her one of those new single piece carbon seats
