Yes you must downshift for climbing.
I am not 100% sure about full coasting on the downhills though.
I know the resistance pretty much almost totally goes away on the downhills, and the kickr has a huge flywheel, so the "wheel" will continue to spin and let you coast somewhat, but I think it would eventually just stop if you had miles and miles of steep downhills and never pedaled.
I will have to try that and see how it works, and let you know.
I think you can also go downhill much fast than you could on a real route that had sharp turns, since you don't really have to steer.
