Wireless Computer

I am putting together a list of must haves for my Q and my next item is a computer. I'm not into keeping track of expended calories, heart rate or the size of my carbon footprint just want to keep track of miles ridden and the time riding. With that said what is a simple reliable cost effective and wireless computer y'all are currently or have used in the past? I'm most familiar with Cateye and have used them with success in the past but I'm not opposed to a different brand.

Wahoo Element Bolt. The easiest to use and price competitive. Just download the phone app, turn on the unit and scan the QR code with your phone. It sets itself up with very little hassle. Pairs easily with any ant+ sensor of just about any brand. I used the old Garmin 500 for quite a few years and it was fine but love the Element.

If you just want to track miles and time with no navigation, you can just use your smart phone with Strava. That's what I use. I pair it with the Wahoo heart rate monitor. Works well.

I have Cateye just to see how fast I am riding and if it's time to go home yet. :)

Yeah go buy a $30-40 dollar mount for your phone and have a cycling computer on par with any $400 gps head unit.

I'm planning to order a Bryton 410E. Has nice features out of the box, can be extended with sensors if I need them in the future. A friend has one and is really satisfied with it. Not that expensive for what it offers, only usefull thing that it's lacking is point-by-point navigation. I have a mount for the phone on the Q45, but if I'm not using the navigation, which in 95% of rides I'm not, it's just to bulky and not that practical in comparison to something like this.

If this is still out of your price range, besides Cateye, I have a good experince with VDO - not sure if they are present in the US. VDO A8/A8+ does the job just fine as a basic cycle computer, as a bonus the battery lasts for years. They have new models now (A8 is out of production I think), but I prefer their interface to cateye - just more clear and I can find the stuff I need faster.

I've been using the Garmin Edge 25 this summer. About the size and appearance of a basic cyclecomputer. Pairs with my phone by Bluetooth, so I can leave the phone in my pocket or bike bag. I like that it will show me who's calling/texting, and the first few words of a text--it doesn't let me answer the phone, but at least I know if the call is worth stopping for. It also has a LiveTrack option, which is nice when I'm out on a long ride or event ride so family can see where I am. It works with the speed and cadence sensors I already had for my old Forerunner 310XT. It lists for $170 USD, I think I paid $135. REI has it on sale this morning (30 Sept 19) for less than $70 and free shipping.

I too can recommend the Garmin Edge 25. I have used mine for the past 3 years and love it. Small, easy to use, syncs easily to a phone, provides Strava segments (not live though I don’t think) and I get about 9-10 hours of usage per battery charge.

I'm using a Lezyne MegaC Bike Computer (GPS, etc).
It seems to work well for me.
I've been using it paired with a HR monitor, Cadence and Speed Sensor as well..
I know you weren't wanting all the "bells and whistles", but it was pretty inexpensive compared to some of the others mentioned.

I have a used Wahoo Mini with speed sensor or a used Wahoo Bolt by itself if you are interested. Just Pm me. I got a Garmin as a birthday gift recently.

Hey Doc
I just ordered the Lezyne Mega XL . I'll move my Padrone back to the Cervelo. Great minds think alike ;)
Although I like the color, especially when I'm using it as a GPS, I kinda wish I had gone with the Mega XL... I've heard that the screen is easier to see in the direct light... Sometimes, the details get "washed out" in bright sun light on mine...
Having a larger screen would be a plus too :)

So, how do you like it?
Initially, it was a bit frustrating and I had to go back and look at a few of the videos online, but now that I've gotten used to it, I'm happy with my purchase...

The larger size and easier to view is why I went with the XL also. It's due to be delivered today. I'm sure it will take some getting use to. Way to many features for me but I got a good deal on a new open box that I couldnt resist ;)

I didn't think I would use many of the features and mainly got it as a GPS map, so I could learn new riding routes and develop others, then decided I needed to know my Cadence and get a more accurate reading on my speed/mileage...
Finally, I decided I needed a Heart Rate Monitor, so I can see what my body's doing on these rides :)...
I love the battery life and now that it's getting dark early, I love that I can leave it back-lit while riding in the dark on the country roads...

I got a great deal on mine after searching for the "best deal" on one. I found a bike store that was closing and selling all of their inventory dirt cheap. I picked mine up for about 50%!!! It was the last Lezyne Mega available (they were out of XL), so my choice was easy...

For anyone interested in the Lezyne Mega Bike Computers, they allow you to connect via AnT or Bluetooth to a wide rage of different sensors, (Speed, Cadence, Power, Heart Rate, Etc.). They also allow you to view incoming calls/text (you cannot answer) if you want. I have mine set up to notify my wife (via an email link) where I am on my ride, so she can track my progress or find me if something should happen.
It transfers my ride to Strava and I can connect to Strava live (which I don't).
Lezyne has a website where you can develop routes on your computer or you can do it on your phone. It also displays your riding data...
There a lot of options with this bike computer that I'm not using (and probably won't).

It allows me to make a profile for multiple bikes/trikes, which has come in handy since have a Trike that I like to ride sometimes (when my wife rides her trike or friends go on theirs). It keeps things like Mileage separate, which is very nice for maintenance records, average speeds on that particular bike, etc.

I have a few DF rider friends who I ride with often who have changed over to Lezyne from Garmin and a couple others...

Hope this helps...
Blessings,
DocS

Hey Doc, have you found that it syncs your completed ride to Strava reliably ?
I keep my phone in a bag on the bike and it would be nice to just record the ride on the Lezyne and have it auto upload when I finish the ride.
I also plan on linking to Live segments to get a few more KOM's ;)

Yes, it syncs just like you mentioned.
I connect my phone before my rides and when I get back, save it on the device. It automatically syncs it to Strava.
I've never tried using Live Segments, so don't know how that would work...

The Lezyne site Ally site maintains your ride data as well and is pretty easy to get around...

If you're riding on a trainer, there is a couple options. Training Peaks and Today's Plan. I've never used them, but hope to try them out in the future...
