That's very nice of you to say, but c'mon I could scuff it up and remove any small improvements. Would look right at home! Ha!

S40 Chainring - for lower gearing

Actually, the SRAM Eagle set supports a 12-speed 10-52t cassette without over-stressing the derailleur. It’s a pretty nice range…

S40 Chainring - for lower gearing

I had an XD hub already, but they also advertise a shimano freehub compatible cassette. I believe it is a 11-46t or 11-50t. The 11-50 would require a derailleur cage upgrade, I believe.

S40 Chainring - for lower gearing

In a similar approach, I changed my 1x11 drivetrain on my S30 to use the 10-48t 11-speed cassette from Garbaruk. This required the extended derailleur cage but works very well, better than the SRAM cassette with the 46t Wolf Tooth cog. If you choose the 10-46t cassette, you apparently do not...

    Cruzebike Quest 559 plus extras...

Hi Bill Unfortunately, that 451 wheelset was sold some time ago. I do however have a very nice 451 rear wheel, Velocity A23 rim and convertible hub (qr or thru axle, Shimano or SRAM XD freehub). Also have two rare Schwalbe Shredda tires in that size. I’ve been thinking of trying it on my...

    Playing with the Q45 shock

If you want to spend more $, it looks like the RockShox Monarch RL is also available in 165 size. Seems equivalent with a single air valve and lockout.

    Playing with the Q45 shock

Yes, the Q45 uses a 165 mm shock (eyelet to eyelet). The travel is quoted at 38 mm. The RockShox Monarch series seems to be available in 165 mm size, but I’ve not been able to compare the DNM to one of those.

    Playing with the Q45 shock

Initially, I replaced the Q45 OEM spring shock with a KindShock A5RR1 air shock. The KindShock was used by several of us on the old Quest series and worked well there. Even with a positive chamber pressure up to 160 psi (absolute max is 180 psi), the Q45 feels somewhat soft and a little bouncy...

    S30 rear suspension/elastomer

I frankly do not exactly recall how I did that, but I believe I tried and failed to get the elastomer out from the top, so benphyr is basically correct. However, I do not believe there is a bolt through the center of the elastomer. The elastomer is centered by fitting somewhat tightly in the...

    S30 rear suspension/elastomer

I only dealt with this years ago but seem to remember I had the same problem. The solution was to orient the elastomer properly and put sufficient preload on it to keep contact even with no one in the bike. I vaguely remember the guidance is to just expose the second convolution at the exit of...

    S30 rear suspension/elastomer

It looks to me that you have the elastomer installed upside down. The elastomer has different mating surfaces on the two ends and one looks more centering than the other. Also (I’m guessing here) it may be that the elastomer is too high up but that would change if it were inverted. Here is a...

    Bar wrap/grips

I like the Supacaz and and Silic1 suggestions. This discussion induced me to look again at my S30 grips and I took a somewhat different tack. I ran across shrink tubing made for grips. It's cheap and available on Amazon, eBay, etc. So I laid down a double layer of relatively low-cost...

    Bar wrap/grips

Actually, Ratz’s video shows a counter-clockwise wrap on the right. Notice the tape ascends upward as it goes from right to left on the face of the bar. This is the opposite of what is recommended for diamond frame road bikes, reflecting the difference in stress you put on the wrap with...

    Bar wrap/grips

It's likely been mentioned before, but I find a single layer of friction tape applied to the grip area under the handlebar tape keeps the tape from slipping over some prolonged period. I was just reminded of that a few days ago when the new handlebar tape on my S30 promptly slipped down and off...

Getting the Q45 closer to trail-ready

Hi Keith, I'm not sure I have any deep wisdom to share, my variations on this bike is still a work in progress, but to your questions: The seat in the picture is a Thorseat Easy (size medium). I've been trying that out because it worked well with my old CB Quest 559. As noted earlier I also...
