The drag from the human head is caused primarily by the turbulance occurring behind the head. The road bike time trial helmets attempt to reduce this by fairing the helmet into the rider's back as much as possible. In a recumbent position this is impossible. The only approach with a recumbent helmet is to extend it to the rear as much as possible. I don't know what the rules permit, but extending the cross section to the rear, with gradual tapering, if possible, is the only shape that will do much to reduce the drag. If a tail box were legal, the top of the tail box could be shaped to mate with the helmet in a continuous airfoil shape.

Won't address the drag-behind-the-head issue but it might address issues one might have on say, a 100 mile, record attempt.

If it doesn't catch more air than it deflects.
