So the saga is finally coming to an end. After several email exchanges with the HED team, I opted to replace the Stinger-6 wheelset with a Jet-6 Plus wheelset. Moving away from tubular to clincher tires. So, I now have two practically new and one in the box Gatorskin Sprinter tubular tires and tape, that need a new home.

Jason's comments nagged me a bit, so I spent some time speaking to Chris Thornham of FLO Cycling and pivoted from their Aluminum+Carbon to full Carbon Clincher wheels. I plan to go tubeless, installing Hutchinson Sector 28 tires on the FLO 60s. I am hoping for both a smooth ride and added rim protection. The FLO wheels arrive tomorrow.

The HED wheels are heading (no pun intended) back home today via FedEx. For reference, BikeFlights.com offered the best shipping rates.

Looks great. What handlebar and headrest are you using?

Thank you. It is a TXCH carbon handlebar, and the headrest is from Optima. I had to modify the support rods of the headrest assembly to accommodate the shape of the tailbox.

Here's my smashed tubular carbon Bontrager wheel. Going down a modest slope, my Silvio S30 started uncontrollable oscillations and the front wheel ran into a curb. That was one year ago, and I still haven't replaced it and started riding again. Got to get it done.

Wow, you are very fortunate not to have been seriously injured! That is definitely a catastrophic failure.

I went out for a quick mid-day, 12mi test ride. Having not experienced tubeless tires before, I did not want to venture too far. Both the wheels and tires performed exceptionally well. I was not expecting much of a difference between 25mm tubular and 28mm tubeless tires, but it was quite noticeable. Smoother ride, maybe slightly faster, and just slightly more road (rolling) noise. I am rethinking the idea of placing tubes in the HED wheels once they arrive. Tubeless may be the future. 28c seems to be the sweet-spot; however, I an think about giving either a 30 or 32 a try.

Sweet ride! What chainrings and crank length?

Wait a minute.. did you say 52/34 and not 50/34? How well does it shift to big ring? My 50/34 is very finicky. If I push on the pedal too much while shifting to 50t, chain will drop. I thought of changing 50t to 52t but wasn't sure if it will work.

I use a 52 / 34 ultegra 6800 originally 52/36 mid compact. Got to love 110 mm bcd standardisation on shimano except for the four arms lol.

Anyhow it changes well and never overshoots top or bottom. Go get yourself a 52 and try it.

Good to know. I’m running 46-34 and quite happy w the overlap but that’s probably because I still haven’t been above 30mph. Nice to know that’s an option when my nerve catches up w my legs!

Would you need a longer rear derailleur cage to handle more teeth?

I also have no shifting issues other that it is a large jump between chainrings. So, you have to plan you shifting accordingly. I am currently using a DuraAce 10sp Di2 setup. My plan is to move to an XShifter 11sp set-up for greater range, when they eventually ship out their ordered units.

You would have to check compatibility capacity of your front mech. though. should not be an issue . Seen many chainrings with bigger jumps than recommended. Heck I’ve got a triple road
with a 24 granny 39 and 53 and changes are okay. Catrike 700 long chain.......s

For sure you’ll run out of gears on a 46 with that speedy machine.

maybe a longer chain possibly but we are talking front chain rings not cassette here.

Certainly adding teeth ( rear cassette) via a wolf tooth etc can quickly require a long cage rear mech. to be fitted.

Apart from v20 all my bikes are fitted with mtb rear long cage mechs so I can fit a dinner plate when needed. When I fit the praxis works 10 speed 11 - 40 with 53 - 39
It’s a b screw max adjust and no cross chaining.
