New Silvio Pics

I have small ceder closet that I use for an exercize room, and that is where my trainer and Silvio will be until the weather is warm enough to ride. I am most likely a couple months away from my first ride on my Silvio. Anyway here are a couple of pictures.

As an aside, and it may or may not matter, but the bike is on the trainer backwards. You want the trainer turning the same way it would with a RWD bike.

Thanks Charles, I was wondering about that. I bought the trainer hoping it might help in some way to orient me to the Silvio. I know it won't help with ballance so maybe it is just one way I can get on the bike until winter is over.

Hi Rod,

Which particular model are those Radical bags. They seem to fit the Silvio really well.

Hi Rod,
No, it won't help you

Hi Rod,

No, it won't help you balancing, but you can get a lot of good training. One leg pedaling, smooth high cadence pedaling, and well, just getting into shape will help you when you get out on the road (higher cadence means less pedal steer).

Look at Kim's videos and imaging doing some of these things while sitting on your bike on the trainer. Visualising these things before you actually get a chance to try can make it easier. (And, if bored, you can read about my experiences starting out here).

Cheers,
Charles

It will help

To my surprise, as I noted in anothe post, riding on the trainer and especially doing single leg drills seemed to have a significant impact on my stability when I got back on the road after about a month off. I was ready to give up before that.

I have and will continue to

I have and will continue to benifit from all the advice you guys are so willing to share. Hi Eric the bags are solo racer narrow I ordered them after reading the posts on bags for the Silio. Thats why I took a picture of the back so you could see the clearance between the tire and bag. The side of the bags against the tire is stiff from something sewn in the linning. I am happy with the fit I will not need to do any thing to the bag to make it fit. Charles, I'll check out your post and Kim's video's thanks again. Mick, I have followed your posts and am glad you are keeping the Silvio, that gives me great encouragement to stick with it too

I have found that after

I have found that after riding many hours on rollers that I am significantly more stable and relaxed when I ride outdoors on the roads. This was especially noticeable for my slow speed handling and maneuvering.

Unfortunately we are back to much colder temperatures with snow and ice on the roads so I'm back inside on the rollers.

I am now riding clipped in on my rollers too. At first I used the platform side of my dual pedals but now I'm clipping in. I also found it helpful on the rollers to place a mirror propped up on the ground in front of me so I could easily see where my wheels were tracking on the rollers. This makes it easier to stay centered as otherwise you can't really see where your front wheel is positioned on the rollers from the reclined seating position.

Hmmm Radical Solo Racer narrow - I wonder if these would fit the Vendetta better than their side panniers?

Hi Eric,
Last summer my wife

Hi Eric,
Last summer my wife and I took a trip to michigan with our bikes, I wanted to go to a rial trial somewhere not to far from Detroit, my wife wanted to be by the lake. Needless to say we went to Holland. I do not remember where the rail trail was but I thought at the time it looked pretty nice. We like Michigan alot and I always like biking as much as posible on our getaways.

Rod: nice looking bike and

Rod: nice looking bike and bags!

I used the Solo Racer Wide bags and decided to place them below the seat.
Someone else on the Forum (don't recall now), set them up as you did....but reversed them.

Eric: If these don't fit on the Vendetta seat, they may fit below the seat as they do on the Silvio?
Radical makes a real nice product.

Holland, Michigan is a great

Holland, Michigan is a great place for bicycling - during the warmer months! Nice MUPs all over and good roads too.

I have a friend with a home in Holland and took my old DF over and went riding with him back on the weekend of Sep 1 and 2.

We rode up to Kirk Park and back (about 21 miles) both days:

Below is my friend Greg at Kirk Park which was our turn-around point where we took a brief break to check out Lake Michigan, hydrate, and use the park rest rooms for a bio break.

Hi Charles,  I checked out

Hi Charles, I checked out your post about your early experience, nice job in creating a verbal picture of what it is like to learn to ride the cruz bike. I also ckecked out Kim videos and will revisit them again before I take the bike out. By the way I also tutned my trainer around, thanks for the heads up.
Hi Mick, I will try some of training Ideas you had. I hope it will do the same for me.
Hey Bob your bags look very good under the seat.
Eric, do you travel to Holland to see Greg often? I live 40 miles west of chicago and plan on taking a couple trips to Michigan this Summer. I will let you know before we come to Mich. and if you haven't purchase a bag for your Vendetta yet you can try the solo racer to see if you like it. And I could see a Vendetta up close.

Hi Rod,
I usually manage to

Hi Rod,

I usually manage to get over to Holland a few to several times a year. It just depends on work schedule, etc. This year may be a bit more hit and miss due to these events taking up some of my vacation time:

I would like to compete in the National 24 Hour Challenge this year, June 15-16, 2013 in Middleville, MI which is in between Grand Rapids and Lansing. See http://www.n24hc.org/

Later in the year (Aug 28, 2013) I was thinking about doing the DALMAC ( http://www.dalmac.org/ ) Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinaw 5 day ride where you ride from Lansing, MI up to and over the Mackinaw bridge to Sault Ste. Marie. This is the only time you can ride a bicycle across the Mackinaw bridge.

Do you feel like doing some ultra racing or touring up to and over the Mackinaw bridge on your Silvio?

I can see how that would work better. For most trainers, it may not matter if they are run backwards. John T. posted about a wind trainer where he had some pretty colorful and unfortunately side effects by running it backwards.

Hi Eric,
24 hour challenge, 5

Hi Eric,
24 hour challenge, 5 day ride, wow that would be way beyond my ability. I will be 66 in March and have had a few major surgeries in my past. That being said I feel preety good right now and my goal for this year is to complete a century ride. We have relatives in Grand Rapids it would be nice see you accept the trophy on June 16th.

As far as 24 hour challenge, you're right. They're all nuts! :D

As far as the 5 day rides, they might not be so crazy (where you of course need to be in tune with your body and not push it too hard).

Looking at the ones Eric mentioned, we're talking about an average of 70 miles a day. Assuming you didn't push it, that might be doable. And there's nothing that says you have to do this 5 day ride. I've seen some with mileage as low as 40 miles a day.

Pushing yourself for some crazy (err, well...., no...., riding for 24 hours straight is just crazy and no I'm not jealous at all :D ) goal doesn't make sense. But working towards a 5 day credit card tour of some place you've never been might be a wonderful goal.

Cheers,
Charles
