recommendations for tire liners?

Hi,
Was out doing a major ride (Seattle to Portland) and had my front tire blow out. This is the second time for me so considering running tire liners. Any recommendations? Using Continental GP5000s(32mm) with TPU tubes.
Thanks in advance.

Tough to say, I don't know much about them. While I expect you're comfortable with the current tyres, I've had good experience (fortune?) with Rene Herse and Pirelli Cinturato Velo TLR on a Gen1 S40. The former probably because you can run wider tyres at low pressure that bend around things, and the latter becasue it's got good protection.

Seems like a few CBers have had blowouts lately Randy. RAR2 just had one (slow leak), and I not only had a pinch flat from running a temporary tubed tire for lazily running it too long, I had an immediate puncture near the valve yesterday, forcing me to spend way too long in the sun and having to push my V20 quite a ways. I am going to re-set up both tires today, with a fresh batch of sealant, but I did see some inserts at 1 of my LBS that looked promising if I only consider the sales pitch on the box.

Frito, I didn't have a blowout. My cheap tires were leaking sealant through the tread at speed. Never went flat but would be softer when I got home.

Randy, why do you think your front tire blew?

There was a thread, "V20 front tire suddenly lost pressure and I crashed." I mention the "Vittoria Air-Liner inserts" in that thread. But I have not tried them. In that thread there was a lot of mentions of going tubeless. Are you running tubeless?

I am running Conti 5000 GP (28mm) with regular butyl tubes. I adjust tire pressure before each ride. I had thoughts of trying tubeless (wheels are set for this) but have not tried it - seems like more work.

I had flats a lot until I switched to tubeless - only 2 flats in 5 years and neither led to a fall. I cannot say enough about them. Nice wide tubeless tires with low pressure - now way to get pinch flats since no tube. I built a set of wheels for someone this year and used Vittoria inserts - They looked decent, but were a real pain to install (probably because it was a new thing) - but they are also designed to go in tubeless tires, which I guess makes sense. I guess they would save you if the tubeless tire goes flat.

I am a fan of tubeless too. I was lazy and gambled with a tube for the front just because the GP5000 TL tires I have are so difficult to mount on my wheels. However, considering all I went through yesterday because of a pinch flat and subsequent puncture near the valve you'll see me on nothing but tubeless for quite a while. I'd much rather wash the sealant off in my spare time and a place of my choosing than get stuck in the sun on the side of the road again.

Hi, I am a nail magnet. Nail went cleanly through the tire and tube. Trying something new now for road rash, Hydrocolloid Patch Bandages with Self-Adhesive. ;-)

Just topped off my tires today with new sealant. The rear has about 4000km on it and sealed up quickly, but the front is new and I had to keep re-inflating it before the sealant started working. 1st inflate was to 100psi to seat the bead and spun it to get the sealant all the way around. It leaked until almost flat again. 2nd inflate was to 80psi and another spin, it deflated to almost flat. 3rd inflate was to 60, and it seems to be holding. If it does hold then I will install it.
Anyway, back to inserts... I hardly get flats here so inserts don't make sense for me. But they would make sense if I lived in a place that I often had flats in.

So sorry to hear this Randy! I just added sealant into my front TPU tube last night to try it out.

I have a set of 32mm GP5000 Tubeless if you want to go for tubeless. I bought them and realized they are just a little too big from my V20. Still in boxes. I need to get 30mm tubeless size instead.

Hope to see you riding soon!

Larry Oslund put me on to this…amazing stuff! Heals and leaves no scars.

Thanks Micheal! Saw your previous note(Whats App). Have been resisting the change to tubeless. In my case I’m not sure it would have mattered. The nail was noticeable and lodged in the center tread. I have Mr Tuffy tire liners on order. May have to start running Gator Skins.

Second thought, I’ll take them if they are still available. Contemplating a new wheel set and these will be a great match.

I have been using tubeless for year and a half. I have had two punchers that I needed to plug. Plugging is much easier than replacing a tube. I use dynaplugs but there are several options out there. On the first flat I didn't realize that I had a flat for 40 miles (was on a 275 mile ride). It was the rear but the the tire stayed on the rim and was rideable. The rims are hooked carbon and the tire is GP 5000 AS TR 32's.

The second puncture was again on the rear. It was a 1.5 inch drywall screw. This time the screw remained in the tire and I road for 10 miles before stopping to figure out what the ticking sound was (it was the screw head hitting the pavement when I leaned the buke right). The tire was still fully inflated - the sealant having sealed around the screw. When I removed the screw the sealant didn't quite stop the leak and I put a plug in.

At this point I'm confident that the tire will hold the rim plenty long to remain ridable for some time after a puncture.

When I first went tubeless I looked in inserts but decided against them because the are not generally field serviceable. The big issue is that getting the tire off the rim to effect a repair (such as inserting a boot or tube) with an insert installed may not be possible on the side of the road.

I have been tubeless on my V20C and S-40 for a couple years. I find that I have had punctures when I eventually change my tires at the end of their wear life (Conti GP5k, 28s, and 30s) I have never had a flat on the road but find 4-5 in the old tires at change out. The last time there was a car radial tirecord wire sticking through the tire!
I have been using Vittoria inserts for the last year and like them. Be sure to get the correct size insert for the size tire you are using. The first time mounting them was a challenge but it has gone well since. I haven't felt any performance negatives and when my last tires wore out completely I was able to ride home on the liner and a flat tire. I put them in for safety in case of a fast front tire blow out on a down hill. YMMV.
