S1 instruction manual

I just bought a Silvio 1.0 #83 in fantastic condition. It was bought by an engineer the garaged when he couldn’t ride it. He sold it to a guy that put a few hundred miles on it before I bought it. It is for a friend of mine. Great paint job. The boom is pretty different from my current Silvio which is why I am looking for a manual.

I did search the forum and found a couple of links but those did not work. I would welcome any tips regarding the 1.0. I did email Robert but haven’t heard back and thought the forum might help quicker.

Thanks to all.EA75C81D-0800-43DD-B8BF-8D773353D451.jpeg

1 If the photo is of the S1 set up for you, then the BB should be high enough for your thighs not to dip into the front of the seat. If it is, buy a 2nd hand 50 mm or 100 mm chain stay extension, so the BB height will be increased.
2 Replace the standard cushion hard and soft foam with 30 mm (3 layers, top and bottom folded around the central layer) Ventisit mesh to fit INSIDE the existing seat cushion outer.

3 If the tyres are 23 mm, replace them with 25 mm, or 28 mm(might require filing of the front and rear crowns to follow the tyre profile) and run them at the suggested tyre pressure of this link.

4 Check that the circular rear fork in the spring area has a 10 mm radiused ramp filed into it, so the Titanium spring is not bending around a point(as with the circular fork top), instead of the whole width of the spring.

5 This is the Silvio V1.0 Assembly instructions

Did it come with a spare derailleur hanger, as these are different to the current hangers.
Did it come with a 250 psi front air spring pump? and start at 150 psi then adjust to get 20%(8 mm) of the 40 mm travel when sitting on the bike with legs on the pedals.

Exactly what I need. Thank you! No spare hanger but yes for the pump. I already have a pump for a couple of other air shocks. I will check all of the other items you mentioned. Good idea about the ventisit mesh. Thanks again.

Slim has some expert threads on the silvio and well worth a forum search.

By the way nice rack and one giant size laundry ? brother ;)

Laundry is in the garage so the laundry also houses a car. Lots of laundry rooms in garages in Fl. Thanks for the search tip.

Along with the unique "rear" derailleur hanger of the Silvio v1.0, the mounting of the front derailleur is also unique - your choice of four pairs of threaded holes. Any time you radically change the bottom bracket location, whether by sliding the boom or adding/subtracting an extension, you will want to check the mounting to get the cage at the correct angle to the chainwheel.

On mine, one of the eight mounting holes was not deep enough for the screws that worked fine in the other positions. If I didn't have a hardware store within a day's drive I'd have been mad.

Thank you, I do have to move the boom inward about 4”.

I’ll try it on my laptop. I’ve been using my iPad, probably an issue with a pdf reader.

Hi Jake,

Sorry for the late reply.
Here's some archived assembly info from the release of the Silvio. There wasn't a comprehensive illustrated manual in those days. John T hand built mine, so I wasn't bothered...

Kendrick

I remember taking those photos... good times!

Here is a pic of the titanium spring. It appears to me to be ok.

I did look at the forum link and this did not seem to be the same as other S1s. No curve that I can see. The one bike had a very pronounced curve to the titanium. So, does this seem to be ok and not require the mod that Superslim recommends?

Cruzbike changed the rear fork top to square from round, after about 4 or 5 of us had Titanium plate spring failures!

I can provide illustrated instructions for the leaf spring update if they are needed... PM me with an e-mail address...

Is it possible to put a new front boom on the S1. Meaning the newer boom assemble with the rounder tubes?

The boom on the S1 doesn’t look as sleek as on the newer versions. It also seems more complicated. The current setup is just a tad long for the person riding. So I guess, we need to cut the boom. I started looking at it and it seems it won’t go any smaller. The smaller tube won’t go in the larger tube any more. We could bring the whole thing closer but then the cockpit gets small.

While we were looking at it, we wondered if it could be changed out for a curved slider. It would make it easier to see over the handlbars.

A S40 front boom and steerer clamp might fit, as the gap between the two S1 BB clamps is 45 mm, and the S40 BB boom is 41 mm OD.
You would need new handle bars as the S1 handle bar clamps are for 25 mm dia and the S30/40 is for 32 mm dia.

The OD of the S1 and S30 Bottom Brackets are 42.9 mm, so Clamp IDs are the same.
A bit of filing on the inside edges of the S1 clamps might be required to clear the welding of the BB boom to the bottom bracket.

I would check with Robert Holler to see if this is actually possible.

From the initial photo of the S1 in the large Laundry, the handlebars seem to be a long way behind the steerer clamp!

When I set up my S1 or S30, I start with adjusting the knee clearance to the handlebars first, by releasing the clamp between the Outer tube (S1 BB) and Inner tube (S1 Handle Boom), and adjusting so there is minimum clearance between the handlebar and the thigh in the upper position.

I then release the Clamp at the steerer tube top to the handlebar Boom, to adjust for the correct leg length, starting with the leg straight, and the heel just touching the extended pedal, then small 5 mm adjustments from there, ONLY using the Steerer tube clamp for adjustments.

I then rotate the handle bar, so parallel to the body, so the wrists are not bent, and check for arm length, so for me, the elbows are at 90 degrees.
I have long arms, so I had to go for a handlebar with a long Drop, WTB Dirt Drops (127 mm drop) on the S1, but was able to get away with a short drop (116 mm drop) Salsa Cowchipper 2 on the S30, due to the 28 degree seat back angle.

If the handle bars are too far away with a short drop handlebar, then the steerer tube clamp needs to be released, and adjusted to the desired arm length, then the Inner to Outer clamp adjusted to the correct leg length.

Super Slim, I did check with Robert and it is possible. Cost runs 325$ plus shipping. I have my original Silvio handlebars since I switched to a Salsa bar also. Robert said you could use the same bars but he must have misspoke. Only paid 800$ for the bike so another 325$ might not be smart.

Do you think the handling would improve with this change or would it be a waste of $$? Maybe I could remove a few of the stem spacers?

Thank you for the adjustment tips. I think we now have it situated for reach and leg length.

It would be nicer not to look at the handlebar but be able to look over it easily. Adding a Garmin etc is in the field of view. I guess I prefer a car like setup, gadgets etc below the windshield instead of on the dashboard. It would make it a bit easier to see the road right in front of the bike.
