S30 water bottle mounts and handlebar

I just finished riding 150 miles on my S30 over 3 days. I loved the 150mm cranks. I found the seat ok and headrest ok. I did have two issues.

1. I have a water bottle mounted on the slider but my legs would hit the bottle. The condensation also dripped. I looked at mounting a cage under the seat but the holes are at the narrowest part of the seat. None of the cages I have will fit. Even if I could put a cage there a traditional round bottle won't fit. What is the solution? A special cage and bottle?

I searched the forum and did not find something for the S30 that answered my question.

Does the cruzbike bottle cages have something special that lets the mount clear the seat lip?

2. The second issue is the handlebar. I never could find a comfortable position. The bars are really wide. My arms were flared out and I could not get the crook out of my wrist. I've read the forum topics about handlebars....salsa woodchipper etc. Can regular road drop bars be used without goofing up the steering? Is there a handlebar width range that is considered best? My bike shop always said that the drop bars on my road bike should be about my shoulder width. Is this true for the Silvio also?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes the Cruzbike one comes with the right length bolts and washers to get the cage a few mm's off the seat to allow for the clearance. On the Silvio I use a different cage ,the Lezyne Flow, because the bottom eject on train tracks and the Cruzbike ones didn't exist back then.

For the boom we use the http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Gian...o-aero-kit-with-water-bottle/32413247318.html. The replacement bottles come in two sizes and are easy enough to find on Ebay The cage is carbon so it's stupid expensive; but if you use one you'll think it's money well spent. Our V20's have 3 of those; one on the boom and two on the seat. With the behind the head mounts we can carry enough water for 100 miles on a cool day and on at 85+ days I need to get water at about 75 miles.

There is a new CB bar coming; it's similar to the woodchipper. Have someone measure the width of your shoulder. Basically, chest out; shoulders back; measure width. Get me that number and I can compare that to our sizes here; and the gosh awful number of bars we tested. I should be able to tell you within reason if you'll like the chipper or of you would want to try one of the other ones.

The main problem with stock "Road" bars is leg interference at slow speeds when turning. Cross/off road bars have just enough flare to solve the problem.

Does anyone have a source for the Midge on-one bar that is not from the UK? It seems the Brits want more for the shipping cost than the bar? If not, maybe a hint to the Chinese can get us an Alibaba $5 Midge bar copy with free shipping. :rolleyes:

My shoulder width is 15" as measured by a friend. I am measurement challenged. I like to measure several times and still get it wrong.

I think I might go with the Giant cage for the boom and 2 cruzbike cages for the seat.

Ok at 15" your hand spread is going to be about 40cm" and you leg width about 41cm. For an average person.
Woodchipper's flare inward (there best feasture for getting a good brighter position)
so you'd want 44 or 46cm Woodchipper 2 or a Midge On-One.... For that shoulder width.

You can verify this measurement. Stand barefoot feet shoulder width apart and hold a tape measure in your hands; let you hands hang down to your legs in a relax postion. Your thumbs should be about 16" apart or 40cm". For leg clearance: 4cm's more than your thumb width should leave room for you legs at almost any bar rotation angle. (Nothing scientific here; this is how I did the rough fit and bar selection on PB's bike and mine)

Also Might be worth checking with Robert on the ETA of the new bars (I'm not 100% up on the status of those including (1) if they are a go, (2) the time frame) I only know that it was being worked and tested.

Are there going to be any photos and dimensions of the new bar compared to the Midge On One, woodchipper cowchipper midge on one cruzbike TOP View.jpg woodchipper cowchipper midge on one cruzbike.jpg Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 20.09.08 PM.png Cowchipper and Woodchipper?

Oh crap. I'm 18" at the shoulders. My thumbs hang about 19" apart. That's 48cm (which is 2cm bigger than their biggest size). I doubt the new S30 bars will be available in 52cm width!

However, I fit nicely in the stock V20 bars...so maybe there's hope! :)

Those are flared out a ton ; the Salsa flare inward so you loose a bunch of space.
It's really hard to photo graph that part. You can sort of see it in photo #2 of Slim's post.

I emailed Robert. There is no definitive eta on the new bars. There are a Salsa Woodchipper 2 clone. He also said the waterbottle cages comes with 5mm bolts for use with the headrest mount. Guess I'll look at the Lezyne Flow cages. I don't want the cages behind my headrest. I have an under seat bag mounted there for my phone etc. It is easy to reach. I really only drink when stopped.

I ran into the same clearance issue with the cages. I just took a short length of 1/8" x 1/2" aluminum bar, drilled two 5mm holes to match the seat, and put it between the seat pan and the cage to increase the clearance.

Just purchased used Salsa Woodchipper 2 bars from EBay. Yea! Already trimmed one inch. I also used a method similar to Robert O to mount my cage under the seat. Pouring rain here so goofing around with the bikes.

I had a look at that Midge bar and saw no difference between that bar and the stock bar that comes with the V20?o_O

Visually the on-one does look very similar. But a couple of differences.

I really should have added the cruzbike bars to the table my bad but in general

C = is a bit wider
B = is a bit narrower
A = is a bit narrower
D = is a bit shorter
E = is a bit shorter
the flare is less

Result:
  • The brifters wind up pointed more forward giving a better on the hood aero position (for me)
  • The mirrors can be just a bit wider which helps with sight lines.
  • More leg clearance back at the straight part of the bar; allowing the bars to go a bit further forward. Useful for thigh clearance on bigger guys.
  • You can rotate them down to hardy's preferred position for long distance and you get a narrower had position.
  • Robert really like his arms back close to the body; so he can ride the WoodChipper in-spite of having big legs.
  • I'm a tad smaller but like the bar a bit further forward; if I ride the Wood Chippers I can do it but my slow speed turning is hampered by leg interference.
  • The two most obvious changes are the angle of the brifters; and the flare imparted to the hands
  • The Midge basically splits the different between the old Gary-2 bars and the WoodChipper leaving the bars from widest to narrowest being: Stock, Midge, Gary-2, WoodChipper2 in that order.
I am still surprised on how millimeters make difference on handlebar. and boy they are a pain to try numerous types....

Any how, Lee I actually need to pickup a second set of bars going into this fall/winter for a build. If you wanted to try a set on bike for comparison this fall; we could coordinate getting a set to you to try on your bike. If you don't like them you'd just pack them up and send them on over. If you do like them we gain another data point and learn something. PM me if you to do something like that.

I am waiting on the Woodchipper bar to arrive. In the meantime, I am taking another trip to ride on the little Miami bike trail this Mon-Thu. The bar should be at my doorstep when I get home.

I am also changing out a few things on my Sofrider, mainly waterbottle mounting and storage.
