S40 Roadie

Introducing my S40 built from the kit with the Ventisit added. Has not seen the road yet because its too cold here in the Northeast where I live, but its itching to go out and will do so as soon as the weather turns warm. Below is the build sheet and several photos. Weight as pictured is 23.6 lbs. My Softrider will soon be up for sale.

Love the Orange bar tape, that's the same colour I went for to match the frame highlights and hoods on the brake levers. I couldn't find orange cable outer though

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the single ring. I have 52/39/30 and 12-28 cassette

The single ring comes from my experience with the Softrider and that has only eight speeds in the back. Even that I found was fine for me. The orange cable outer is from the big auction site. I wish the color selection on the S40 was better, something like the bold colors of the V20 or the new Q45. So I wanted to get some color into it. That gray color of the S40 will not offend anyone but neither will thrill anyone.

By looking at the 2nd photo, if I were the designer of the bike, I would use integrated (or semi-integrated) headset, lower the front part of the frame and shorten the chain stay.
Your feet are kicking into the sky! Please look at Leif's photo of V20 on Race Series you'll know what I mean.

Sweet set up. I too would be interested in how you do w the single front ring. I just finished a similar build but w double. But the FD setup is such a challenge I'm tempted to just go single. Right now I'm running 50:34 front w 11-36 rear Sram GX 11 speed.

Another single-ringer. Great minds think alike. My lowest gear is lower than yours. There are some hills that I can barely climb. Do you go up any really steep slopes?

Very nicely done. I like the color additions you made. Gray makes an excellent "canvas" to add bold highlights to.

I am almost finished with my T50 beach bike, where I used a 1x11 setup with a 42t Cruzbike e-ring chainring with a Sunrace 11-50 eleven speed cassette.

I'll be interested to compare notes with you on your roadie 1x setup.

Another single-ringer. Great minds think alike. My lowest gear is lower than yours. There are some hills that I can barely climb. Do you go up any really steep slopes?

I ride exclusively on a paved, as smooth as a conventional auto road, rail trail currently 12 miles long one way, that has a mild slope to it. With the Softrider I never had to go to the lowest gear on it. Trail will be expanded to 24 miles one way by the end of 2019.

Gee the s40 is a great looking machine. Luis she looks great. Makes me really really want one. Doug you are right about the canvas. Whilst the 1 x 11 and no doubt soon available on roadies a 1x12 looks so fantastically clean it is a compromise in terms of stepped changes. This is what the 3 x said to the 2 x early adopters lol. Enjoy.

I'm a bit amazed that you brought it in at 23.6#.
My S40 is 35.8#, with 42mm tires, fenders, tools, under-seat rack + empty pannier for commuting duty.
I must have a kitchen sink in there somewhere...
Amazing how fast the weight adds up.
I'm also running 1x (44 x 11-42). Works well but cadence drops pretty low on anything above 10% grade.

The orange bar tape and cables is super cool looking.

Personally I would struggle with a 42x32 on a steep hill but considering this is only 10.7Kg, maybe it is sufficient.

I got XX1 cog. It did not fit until I added a washer on the drive-side end of the axle. More ratios are always welcome, but I think 12sp is wider so it would not fit my forks. I think the new Silvios have wider forks.

I have a bar end friction shifter. It did not pull enough cable so I got a Jtek Shiftmate. Most excellent device.

Thank you. I do like the clean look which is made possible by the single ring up front, cleans up the front end, cables, and no brifters.

Yes, that weight is as per my Park Tool digital scale. Small weight add up fast.

I do not ride on steep grades, just a gently grade on the paved rail trail. The single chain ring up front saves weight on the derailleur, brifters (which are very heavy), one less cable. Before assembly I did a weight analysis on the kit and will post the results shortly under a separate thread.

Lightness. Another reason for having a single chainwheel. On a Cruzbike, less weight swinging around at the front makes it easier to steer.

And everybody is right, Your it does look deadly cool with the orange bits, which are exactly the same colour as the Cruzbike logo.

Do you mean that You ride only one specific rail trail?

weight for me came in at 13.5kg with mudguards, bottle cages etc 29.7lb, and that's with a triple up front.

I've not weighed it with the rack and rack bag with my tools and spares for audax set-up yet, can do that after easter when I do my first 100k on it. Summer tour will add a lot of weight, and I'm sure I'll get to use my 30 x 28 low gear at some point.

By and large yes. It starts 500 feet from my home, paved smooth as a baby's bottom, no vehicular traffic to lookout for, scenery is all rural, only thing I have to worry about is not running over the occassional jogger or little kid on their training wheel bike not paying attention to who else is around them. At certain times of the day on weekends (I work on weekdays, that is how I pay for the S40) I see less people in 12.5 miles than I have fingers in one hand.
