They stole my Silvio

Hi @paco1961. I have a set of 155mm SRAM Apex cranks (also shortened by Mark) that I am not using. They're in fine shape. Let me know if you're interested. Also I swung a reduced price with Speed and Comfort for two sets of their carbon cranks, sans chainrings (just the arms and spindles). They use the SRAM three-bolt spider pattern, so I put a five arm spider on them from Aerozine. Viola! Ready for regular rings. Aerozine sells both four and five arm spiders, in both 110 and 130bcd.

Thanks for the info and offer. Have a set of Rotor cranks on the way. Will report when I see how it all works together

When I got XX1 there was only one design specification. So I just looked for a chainring and a 11sp chain. Now Wolf sell two different varieties of tooth, Dropstop A and Dropstop B. I suppose Raceface's and Absolute Black's are also different. Do any of them work better or worse with any particular chain? Skinny latte? Moccachino? Almond milk? Can I get one with my name on it?

Three varieties of tooth, actually. Wolf say that if you have a HG+ chain (which I do) then you need the HG+ variety of tooth, and nothing else will work. Abso Black say this also. Problem: all the HG+ rings are direct-mount. Somebody on the internet says that any W/N ring will work. I have in my possession such a ring. If it does not work I will have to get Shimano 165mm cranks, which my knees will not like, or try a KMC chain, which the cog might not like.

When I started buying bits, the order in which I did it was random. If I had searched for a chainring first I would have probably decided to have 11sp. Such is life.

You can actually get Shimano 105 cranks in 160mm length. They are not available in the US but there are a few ebay sellers in Japan who can supply them.

When I got the Grasshopper I fitted heel-clips to the pedals. I found some bits of scrap metal in my shed. I screwed the heel-clips to these and screwed them to the pedals. The heel-clips were in exactly the right place for my mid-foot placement. When I got the Silvio I did it again. After an enormous amount of scrabbling in my collection of old ironmongery and head-scratching. Now I need a third set, and my chance of finding more bits that fit is too small to estimate. Then I remembered something on this here forum. I managed to find the post by @gchichester about pedalinginovations. A pair of them is on its way to me. This here forum is amazing.

Finally I have all the bits. I even waxed the frame, but I did not polish my boom. Today I went to collect the wheels. For some reason I started chatting to the bloke in the bike shop. I told him I have a Shimano 12sp cog at home. He said the hub has the wrong driver body. Imagine my surprise. He said that Hope make loads of different driver bodies and it is difficult to get the right one. He phoned Hope there and then and ordered the correct component. It is going to take two weeks. At least. This bike better be a good one.

This building of bikes is usually vicariously pleasurable. However being a victim of theft and covid short supply and finally incompetence.... well I’m feeling your pain anguish and I’d be upset.

Abhorrent theft it just is inexcusable. Your loss will always sting. Rotten bastards. Karma on their pathetic house.

I hope the new bike though different will find happy fresh ground for you. Even if I have to wait 2 - 4 weeks before you ride the blasted thing. I’m very interested in your opinion.

waxing your frame is tantamount to boom polishing you know.

Maybe I will enjoy it so much I will ride further than I have done before, and find new ground.

Frame-waxing, boom-polishing, there is no hope for me. Apart from the hubs.

How much faster have you gone after waxing the frame and especially the wheels?

Waxing the wheels? No, no! I got 11speed wax! I got mountain wax instead of road wax! This was is for Enve and I have DT Swiss! Or something or other. I managed to do everything else wrong.

Front wheel is on. I got a long skewer from Hope. You guessed it - too long. It sticks out a mile. Why does this stuff happen to me? So I made a sort of shim thingy out of a thru-axle end nut and a mysterious object whose original purpose is lost in the mists of time. Amazing piece of luck that it all fits together. I was just pissed off with buying skewers. They claim that the skewer is 190 mm long. It is actually 235. What is that all about? Anyway, I have this frame that was bought and returned. Looks as if it has never been used, or even touched. I even waxed it. Now it has some 40 years old scrap metal attached. It had to happen. Will it come to bits and kill me?

Now it is official. Old metal attached means it is yours.

I believe what you need is a 145mm tandem skewer.
