Race Cage

Cruzbike’s measurements are correct:
Dimensions:

Length: 14 inch
Height: 9 tapering to 6.5 inch
Width: 11 tapering to 5 inch

Volume: 12L

Recent modifications:
I moved the vertical tubes of my Performance Adjustable Headrest to the outer position yielding two benefits. The Race Cage can be brought in closer without my headrest hitting the tubes and water bottle holders can be attached. This probably smooths airflow from the shoulders to the case. A bonus is that I can put my bottle speaker in there.
With the wider stance you can make a hammock-style headrest like @Frito Bandito

i moved the bottle cages to outside of race cage. I used the threaded bosses in the race cage but went from the outside. I want to use a waterproof bag over the top if necessary. Also a little more room in cage for lightweight items.

My latest set-up has the Race Cage attached to the standard headrest. It's much lighter than the Performance Adjustable Headrest and it positions the cage closer in. When using the Adjustable Carbon Fiber Seat and Headrest extended out to its maximum (similar to my large Thor seat) my helmet was hitting the headrest bar, so I cut it down. The water bottle cages are moved in from the stock location.
I also tried out an Insta360 camera with one and two HSU extension arms.

How does the Varia mounted on your helmet work? Any problems with it when you move your head side to side?

I use the rubber bands threaded through drilled holes. Today I moved the holder up on the helmet to make the Varia perpendicular to the ground. No interference with the botttles, but I’m going to move the bottle gages down a couple inches anyway. The bottle tops are in the air stream coming over my shoulders.
Photos include Giro Vanquish and POC helmets.

Curious if anyone else has had the frame crack? When I was adjusting my headrest the other day, I noticed that the frame on my Race Cage had cracked (Have no idea how long this has been the case as the other three screws held it fine). Luckily the tubes are hollow so a carefully bent steel rod and a generous use of JB Weld has repaired it so just interested if this has happened to anyone else.

Contact Cruzbike, they’ll probably replace it.
Also, nice use of JB Weld. I keep some JB Quick in my storage box.

I've gone through 2 race cages. Both frames broke in the same spot as yours. The 2nd one broke on both sides - 2 breaks.

Cruzbike sent me a replacement with a reinforcement plate. But the holes in the plate do not align properly. It's hard enough to attach without the plate. With the plate, it's impossible (as far as I can tell). So I have a new race cage sitting in my garage, unattached.

I'm using the water bottle only mount from my S40 on the back of my V20c now. (If I mount the new race cage without the plate, it will be broken in 6 months. That's how long each one lasted.)

Mine cracked due to user error. I carry my S40 in my Honda Fit. It can be a tight squeeze. After a ride when I was tired, I packed the bike in the car and decided the hatchback WAS going to close, dammit!

It closed all right, but when I got home I heard an unexpected jingling coming from the cage. D’oh!!

Whoops!

As far as I can tell, mine cracked just from riding. I'm in Colorado and ride a lot of trails. The expansion cracks in the concrete cause the race cage to flex up and down repeatedly on rides. Same thing if I'm on roads as there are many expansion cracks (bentonite plus ice action!), some quite substantial. Sadly, we just don't have the smooth roads that a lot of the southeastern states have.

I hear you. We rode in Colorado on our recumbent trikes going cross-country in 2016, and those roads were jarring even with rear suspension.

I suspected there would be a lot of stress on the lower tubes and there’s clearly a risk of failure with two posts here and Cruzbike’s reinforcement plate. So I decided to augment the strength with rack struts, nuts, and P-clamps.
This would reduce space inside the cage for water bottles, you’d have to use the upper-most attachment points. You can see how I attach my water bottle cages externally.

I am concerned about the effect high speed airflow would have on the Race Cage when I'm transporting my S40 on the back of my car at 70+ mph. It's a VW Sportwagen and a considerable profile of the bike sticks out on either side. Removing and reinstalling the Race Cage would certainly be an annoyance at best. The design is appealing as compared with side mounted racks and removable bags, though that would obviously avoid the problem with wind buffeting.

Anyone have any extensive experience with transporting their Cruzbike and Race Cage on the back of a car?

I've transported my V20c with Race Cage a few times behind my Honda Pilot. It's always nerve-wracking because the wind really does put a lot of pressure on the Race Cage. However, I haven't noticed any ill effects -- except, as noted in my previous comment, I've had two Race Cage frames break on me. I have a new one that I haven't mounted because it will break, too. I've gone back to 2 water bottle cages behind the headrest.
