    Aero Time Trial helmet

Considering the huge number of hours the top TT riders do in low-speed wind tunnels, I would submit that their goofy looking helmets are optimized for such things. IOW, we would do well to consider something of similar shape and finish. If turbulators and flat-finishes were the ticket, you'd see...

    Knees and a Cruzbike

As I said, I'm only half local. My Yankee friends think I have a horribly thick "Southern" accent (they think my wife has a "delightful, Southern Belle accent") while my Southern native friends say, "Yew ain't frum 'roun' heah, izya bwoy?" The awful truth is that I'm one of those...

knobby problem from the knees thread or nomomoto

If you search on the bentrideronline site, there is a "power assist" thread buried in there somewhere that has links to some great information. Basically, the poster built a system to allow him just enough power to assist him in climbing his local hills. Not intended to add speed, just a little...

    Suspension or no suspension

Pramodan, Having ridden recumbents without susupension for nearly 10 yrs, suspension is definitely important. I would rank your list in the following order, from most important to least. 1)Suspension (I consider this to be vital. Sitting upright means you absorb more shock thru your spine. On...

    Knees and a Cruzbike

My momma never once made a square cornbread. If it don't come out of a 10" black-iron skillet, it ain't cornbread! Cornbread ain't tan, it's yaller. Comon' boy, getcher fax strait! And no, I'm not a Huntsville native. I'm a Navy brat, born in Japan. I have, however, lived in Huntsville...

    Knees and a Cruzbike

Percent grade is based on the ratio of "rise to run". So...100% is actually a 45 degree angle (1:1). If you know the percent grade, to find the actual angle, simply use the percent (divided by 100) and take the arc-tangent of it. (0.02tan-1 = 1.15deg). Conversely, if you know the angle, simply...

    Nasty Silvio crash tonight!

Wow, definitely a near miss. Glad you're up and still with us! One word for road-rash: "Tegaderm". Also, get some sterile saline to wash the abrasions with...sure takes the sting out quickly. Buy the Tegaderm down at your local pharmacy, ours carries it in 3 X 3 sheets but even the smaller...

    New Silvio component options...

LOL. I suspect I would not survive that option at the moment, John. I already get a good bit of grief for spending too much time on "hobbies" and not enough time on the "honey-do" list. :( I may not "need" a Silvio...but I sure want one!

    New Silvio component options...

You guys really suck. Here I am, trying to buy a new house, fixing up the old one to sell...preparing to renovate/update the new digs, pouring my money into a hole in the ground... And now you choose to offer an even better deal on a bike I really want! Man! You know how to torture a...

    Knees and a Cruzbike

Howdy Biscuit! Welcome to the Cruzbike forum. Although I have no knee problems, I am also "in the biscuit range" of 300lbs. I've been riding recumbent for about 8 yrs, starting with a trike (Catrike) and then moving to a low-racer (Optima Baron) and then most recently, a Cruzbike Conversion...

    weighty subject

I'm afraid to weigh mine. However, I bet I'll win the 'smallest percentage of total mass' contest. I'll guess that mine is less than 40lbs. Aluminum frame, hubs, rims and shocks. If I can find a set of scales, I'll weigh it and the Baron. I'll bet the Baron is heavier...but not by much.

What is the Optimum Cadence for Hill Climbing

I wouldn't think there is a generic "optimum", everybody does things a bit different. That said, it all sounds wrong to me. I use low cadences in the flats and as the road rises, I start building cadence. In very steep climbs (9%+), I am most comfortable at high cadence...but I think this is...

    Conversion advice please

I think the top tube is way too high. The front edge of the seat on the conversion needs to be quite close to the head-tube...like within 3 or 4 inches (unless you have quite long legs). Nice bike though.

Broken Titanium rear spring - 2

That's the fun part. We may never know what truly caused Slim's spring to fail. Might have been a material defect, might have been a hidden manufacturing defect (surface scratch, etc.). With such a low manufacturing quantity (how many Silvio's are on the road today?) it is very hard to make a...

Broken Titanium rear spring - 2

Well...TI has a different modulus of elasticity than steel (among other things). Fatigue life depends on many parameters so I can only assume that "TI springs last 5 times longer than steel" just means that whoever designed them weighted their design towards a bit more fatigue life. Hard to make...

Broken Titanium rear spring - 2

Interesting. I'm left wondering what sort of peak loads we're looking at...and whether these TI springs are suitable for *ahem* heavy use. :? By creating the radiussed contact area, you are extending the unsupported spring length (just a bit). To retain "normal" ride height a thicker spring...

Measuring the time gap between groups in the Tour de France

Yes, RFID is possible but I'll bet that whatever system they are currently using is quite high tech. The "transponder" system I was talking about was circa 2004...guaranteed to be "old hat" today. 8-) Re: racing Cruzbikes It is always amazing to me that we expect "instant racebikes" to pop...

Measuring the time gap between groups in the Tour de France

It is both simple and very complex. Yes, each rider has a transponder on his bike. Each broadcasts a unique code keyed to the rider, etc. The timing company (it is a large computer company that specializes in timing races, etc.) goes forth before every race and lays pickup loops along the race...

    Confessions of the Cranks

LOL :D When I did my first conversion, I had the tools and still couldn't get the original BB completely apart. I took the bike to my LBS and left it overnight...they couldn't get it apart either~! Fortunately, it was just one of the BB cups, so it didn't interfere with my build or the ride...
