    Nohands riding and starting.

I don't think I agree. You're referring to power being used to bend the frame or bars, then not getting it back via rebound, right? That would certainly be power loss. But that's not what I meant. Maybe "power wasted" would be more accurate for the situation of using sideways friction (of feet...

    Nohands riding and starting.

Not sure I understood the first sentence, with those 2 negatives. I don't use "dead leg" when riding no-hands, but push the pedals outward slightly on each stroke to cancel pedal steer. I can tell because my back rolls slightly side to side, using friction against the seatback (and the pedals)...

    Nohands riding and starting.

... eat my lunch, take photos, post them to Facebook, reply to comments on this forum ... Not quite, but once you get this, it's super easy, much easier than on a DF, especially for more than short distances. Then you feel like you "own" the bike. I found it easier to learn on a slight uphill...

    Light integrated helmets

I've been riding daily with a Lumos helmet since Christmas. It's comfortable. Of course I have other lights, but the helmet lights are quite visible, even in daylight, so say my friends who have seen me. I enjoy the turn signals but only sometimes sense that cars recognize them, probably...

New QX100 on the way to try out this recumbent MBB style of bike

What Ratz said. The main thing is not to be in a hurry. It's a different experience and has a learning curve. The "learning to ride" link he posted is dead on. Just remember, every person on these threads went through this curve and you can too. When you gain confidence on these bikes you will...

    Winter riding

Hi Charles. I think you'll wait a long time! I have no need for either. The fairing is quite adequate - well, if it pours I'd get wet - but it handles the usual Seattle drizzle with aplomb. It also goes on and off in a couple of minutes. What I would like is a foldable or rollable fairing that...

    Winter riding

Or, build or buy a fairing. No need for wool socks, feet are dry. Hands are dry. It's a whole lot warmer, too. I commute every day in rainy Seattle and a fairing is what makes it possible. See photos and build instructions in this post from a couple of years ago...

    QX100 early review

Oh, you are good, Ratz. Color me impressed. But I would call this a new-bike problem. Maybe a few hundred miles while I learned to ride, did my various tweaks (things like fenders and rack/bag mods that also introduced noise), before getting things quiet enough to notice the spokes.

    QX100 early review

Welcome to the group and thanks for the review. I agree on many points. Contra Ratz, I did mention loose (new Q2) spokes on this forum back in 2013. Can't find it now (just on a phone) but there was a bit of discussion. Ratz is absolutely right that spoke ticking can seem to come from any...

    QX 100 rear shock upgrade

Another Kind upgrader here (discussed in an earlier thread). Yeah, it seems to be the only one available in 125mm. I have the RR1 with dual chambers. Works great. The ride quality is far better, mostly because it makes the bike feel stiffer. I have about 2500 miles on it and did not have to...

    Hands-free

What Charles said. You have positive pressure on the pedals at all times. Slight variations of that pressure give you your steering control. I learned this first on slight uphills as well. BK

    Visibility Flags

Amazingly, we're having just this discussion in a thread called "visibility flags" over in "Bike trends, ...". Check it out. I find it more useful to look at "new posts" across all the forums. Although I ride a Quest, lots of interesting and relevant stuff happens across the different forums...

    Visibility Flags

I have a spinner that attracts a lot of attention, but straight up, not out to the side. It's on a thin fiberglass pole that is quite flexible, with the spinner mounted using a fishing swivel. Looks like an Apple rainbow pinwheel from behind at speed. Not that I'm any kind of fast rider, but...

Trying to deal with Recumbutt on Silvio 1.5

But being further forward makes stoppies more frequent, right? Long ago John T explained here that the center of mass of the bike+rider must be behind a line extending up from the front wheel contact point, sloped 60 degrees to the rear. We're typically close to that, and stoppies are a thing we...

Why are road bumps so much more obtrusive on a recumbent?

I had occasion to ride an upright bike the past few days, including on the commute route I’ve done hundreds of times on my Quest2. Same wheelbase, similar lowish-pressure tires (75lbs). The Q is suspended (upgraded air shock plus the dinky front shock), the upright not. It’s a bumpy ride: bad...

QX100 for a customer in Norway

I feel your pain. But my Q2, with front "suspension" gives only a slight advantage. However, one easy upgrade is to switch out the stock spring rear shock for an air shock. It is a dramatic improvement, not only in the ride quality but in the rigidity of the bike. I ride about one gear higher...

    Diatech Headset Adjustment

    Diatech Headset Adjustment

The confusing part for me has been the amount to press the pivot clamp down before tightening the headset. Press the clamp down too much, and the headset clamp has no room to rise on the beveled washer. Too little, and it won't keep the headset clamp from sliding up too much. I've pretty much...

Dang NON-MBB's don't have enough pedal steer to be stable

Back on thread. I rode a standard recumbent (BikeE) for 8 years of daily commuting before selling it and getting my Quest. Last week a friend rode by on his BikeE so of course I had to try it. No can do! Wobbled like crazy! Took me several minutes before I could ride any distance without...
