In a 700c wheel a 38c tire should clear easily but might be a bit close to the crown depending on the tire. Plenty of clearance in the rear. If you go to a 650b wheel you can easily get over 40c.

I agree that clipping in makes riding much easier. The reason I don't recommend it "right away" for most people (on ANY recumbent 2-wheeler not just a Cruzbike) is that they tend to not understand clipping OUT safely. So adding yet another thing to learn proves too much for many. Watching...

This is exactly right. Sadly the clearance there is just too close given the design and weld. This won't be happening on the new ones.

Make sure you have three washers all on the outside of the clamp. Two on the sleeve side and one on the threaded bolt side.
