Results of installing a Viscoset headset in an S40

The new S40 will have the mid Viscoset. In my testing the high was just a bit too much - especially if you do any urban riding like I do where I am contstantly making 90 degree turns. Its awesome at high speed... but for overall the mid seems to be the winning ticket. Robert

    Shipping questions

If you are looking for a box to send a Cruzbike and don't have the original one we use - a larger box from a bike shop that sells mountain bikes or bikes should work. Robert

    Commuting on V20 and S40.

To answer the OP question though - the S40 is really the commenter/tourer. Capable of hauling 4 panniers plus a trunk with aplomb. The V20 is the race bike. Yes It can be set up to do some fast touring - but the rear end is very light compared to the S40 rear end. Maybe for some credit cart...

    Commuting on V20 and S40.

The new S40 underseat rack is a simple bolt-on rack that I think will be the preferred way to carry bags on that bike for sure. I designed it during the early Covid lockdown last spring while at home. Its finally here and it is a WIN!

    New S40

This is a good question - and really I would say the frame set vs. complete S40 is a question of component avalability for you or the shop you get components from... lots of parts are scarce nowadays so building up from a frame *might* be a challenge depending on the spec you are hoping for...

    New S40

This run of S40's will fit 32c (the stock tire) with a fender. Much winning.

    New S40

Indeed it is - all previous S40's can use the Viscoset headset as it is a standard size EC style headtube. The fact that we have pulled off these changes mid-pandemic and been able to weave through the manufacturing process where RAMPANT supply issues of raw material and components are a...

    V20 Pivot bolt and clamp

There should be a total of 3 washers in that connection - all on the outsides: two on the sleeve and one on the bolt side. That will allow the clamp to pinch just the right amount to tighten so there should be no movement there. I also recommend a bit of grease on the sleeve.

    New, nervous and CANT WAIT!

Friction shifting is the best - hands down.

    New, nervous and CANT WAIT!

This depends on the brand and model of the DR mostly. Some long cages can only go to 36 tooth, some to 42 (even if the "stats" don't go that high) and some are designed to go into the 50 tooth range. It isn't just the cage length - the position of the B limit screw and how that can adjust -...

Correct. The external cup version. I recommend the mid tune - that is what is on the Q45... I have a heavy tune one coming to test out but am not sure what that is like yet.

Per Velo Orange: "Stack height is the total height, or thickness, of the headset, not including the parts that fit into the head tube. In other words, it's the vertical distance required to fit the headset. Stack height is important because if it's greater than the available space on the fork...

Results of installing a Viscoset headset in an S40

Yes - It will work on any and all Q45's as they all have a standard headtube. If your CB has a headset with "regular" cups a Viscoset "might" work. If it has integrated bearings (ALL hydroformed older models pre-S40 and also all older Vendettas and Silvios, S30, V20's old and current) it will...

Results of installing a Viscoset headset in an S40

The Viscoset will not work on the older hydroformed models or the current V20 - only the older Q's, current Q45, and the S40 as they have "standard" head tubes that use press-in cups. This is because on some models the headsets are integrated bearings - the bearing races are a part of the head...

Results of installing a Viscoset headset in an S40

Great report! I tested the Viscoset on an S40 and Q45 (and older Quest) for about 14 months before we decided to add it as a stock installation. It is a significant price increase from a manufacturing standpoint given it is a specialty item as opposed to regular headsets of which there are a...

A sign of things to come?

I am widely known for being an early adopter for some things and a very very late adopter for others - especially things that I view are just fine "as they were" (like the QR wheel) Sadly the changes to these things are largely driven by the bigger bike industry forces at work - the component...

    2021 Q45 100 Mile Trial

Thank you for all of this great input. We can look into a stock tire width bump - sadly in the "era of covid" the specifications on stock bikes are going to be taking a "it is what we can get in less than a year" approach - so these are times when half of a batch of bikes might be one spec and...
