My first Bike Sebring. I had a good day. The Battle of the Brands gave me the excuse to go because any number of miles would be a contribution. Right? I didn’t have to PR. (...and I didn’t.) It had been a whole year since I’d ridden a century. I’d spent the year doing social rides with the retirees. You know the ride, go 20 miles to the bakery, have a donut and ride back. Fun times. OK, I did a few other things last year like train for and hike the Grand Canyon rim to rim in one day. I highly recommend it:

And actually, it had been 8 months since I’d ridden my V20, preferring my S40 for the riding I was doing. But what the heck, I rode it around the block a couple times to check the shifting and threw it into the car to head to Florida. I even left my 80mm deep section wheels behind thinking they looked too pompous for my fitness level.
My plan was to stay out of trouble, don’t chase at someone else’s speed, and just keep it below lactate threshold. Nice and steady. I rode the first century solo and finished at 5h 13m. At that point I started thinking, maybe I can get to 200. I had time in the bank. I’d like to get to 200. That’s definitely my stretch goal for the day.
I did my first short loop, then Maria came up and wanted to work together. She was 12 miles ahead of me on the course. I’ve ridden with Maria enough times to know if she doesn’t give me cramps, then she’s having an off day. Unfortunately, that was the case. We finished the day riding together. If I was riding solo, I could have easily talked myself out of continuing, but I wasn’t going to mentally give up in front of her. And that kept me going.
In the end I had 206 miles, enough to tie for 2nd place with John Schlitter, behind Larry’s 1st place in the age group. And Maria had 218 miles. Not quite what she’s known for, but from my vantage point still very impressive as she was suffering and never quits.
