today's covid 19 antique motorcycle moment is a jump to more modern times but to a little bit of ww2 history and returning to single cylinders. ify ou want an accurate history look it up but here is what i generally recall. this bike is one of the group generically called hummers. based on the dkw single, this intellectual property was a spoil of world war 2 to the winners from the Germans. The British, the Russians, the Americans and maybe the french all got rights and made bikes on this design. it is a two stroke single. they are called hummers because there was a dealer that sold a bunch of these and dressed them up special. but they are not all actually hummers, but thats what everyone seems to call them. as i recall they were originally called 125's then 165's, and then hummer's bikes were called hummers. then came the super 10 and then came the pacer scat and ranger. this is a 1962 scat. the scat was based on the pacer which was a pure street bike. made from 1962–1965. there were 3 basics. the pacer, the scat and the pure off road ranger. The Scat was a dual-purpose motorcycle. It had a high front fender and handlebars, softer seat springs, high-mounted exhaust pipe, and street-legal knobies. The big rear ring from the Ranger was available on the Scat as an option. then after all of these was the bobcat, and that was the endof the line. i have both a scat seat and a pacer seat. this bike i found in iowa restored by a guy who was a "hummer" specialist. he was dying of cancer and restored 3, one for each grandkid, (who sadly did not share his enthusiasm for the bikes or appreciate the gesture.) he had an authentic hummer that he had pained lime green with nickel plating. the bike actually glowed. i just couldn't afford it.

todays ride in was cold but little else. there is a great section of road with a slight downhill that is concrete and i can usually fly on, but it has so many chuckholes from winter on the edges of the slabs that i cant see being recumbent that i am too afraid to hammer thru there. and of course first thing in the morning is not really a big power ride moment for me, even waiting until light to go in.

the newly mounted old style tailbox is great, no more crap in my pockets,i used an original headrest bracket but put my big mount for the adjustable headrest on thinking i will try a headrest again this year. the box does buzz a little, so i will need some little pads here and there between the top and body of the box. the conversion back to 2x10 using a rival brifter and force everything else is now complete and effective. i need to back the brake leaver out a little. top gear is 53x11 and bottom is 34x36.

well, i am out of motorcycles.

yesterday's ride home was not joyous. cold headwind from the north. just barely averaged 15 mph. thankfully the route is just under 7 miles, so it only lasts a little while, and riding it is no great achievement. but, i am happy to be riding and making it a commute is a great excuse to ride.

today's ride in was warmer, almost 40 degrees. the wind was essentially calm. i was unable to make any real power. basically going from bed to bike by way of a shower, a cup of coffee and a couple hits on my inhalers is probably not really a suitable warm up. the commuting thing is also demonstrating exactly how out of shape i really am.....

did i happen to mention there is going to be a Michigan cruzbike ride in august? you too can ride the very streets i am riding daily. be sure and mark your calendars and make your reservations. look for the other thread and take a look at the routes that are proposed.

okay i admit it. i didn't ride in today. 33 degrees and dense fog. a two mailbox visibility. since i ride on m63, i figured today was just the kind of day when i would bundle up, and then i would get whacked. i can always go home from work a little early and go for a ride when its warmer and no fog.

i haven't driven a car in a week. i forgot how much i really like driving cars.

so, since i am out of motorcycles to show you all, the covid moment today will be one of the projects from my "laboratory" (insert Frankenstein electrical discharge, fiendish laugh, and pipe organ flourish) This little bugger is something the sharp eyed may have seen hanging in my garage. i started work on this a couple years ago and have been fiddling with it off and on. i finally put it in ride-able form last week, just to test. it still needs the rear brake caliper(s)s to be mounted, and the drive train is a disaster needed to be adjusted, and the cables are all in the way, but the fundamental unit is sound. it is really quite a flexible flyer right now in that the whole rear back of the swing arm is only mounted to the frame by the shock joint and the pivot, and there is way too much load on those two points. i may well ditch the whole rear swing arm in favor of a rigid hexahedron mount. i have only run it up and down the driveway a couple times, but once i am going at any speed at all the bike straightens up, and in turns the lean actually has some benefit, but at stops and at super slow it sags. it also has a bunch of flop in front and a ton of tiller. but it is a start. i may sneak out to the hardware store this weekend and get some flat stock aluminium (insert Australian/UK pronunciation phonetics here) to settle the back end down. the rear camber is -12, which is probably a little too much, and it is super sensitive to rear caster changes.

feel free to use your covid-19 spare time to hypothicate on the history of this thing, the mistakes i have made, the improvement i should make, and the usual list banter.

once we have exhausted this one, i will bring another body out from the lab......

AND DID I MENTION...

there is going to be a Michigan cruzbike ride in august? perhaps that may be the chance of a lifetime to ride this very abomination!

At the very least you can ride the very streets i am riding daily. be sure and mark your calendars and make your reservations. look for the other thread and take a look at the routes that are proposed.

Will your normal cycling route be covered in rose pellets???

I might be old (58), compared to most of you, but I can not see how the trike tilts???????
The rear axle LOOKS as though it is solidly clamped to the rear wheel drop out!

did you mean rose petals? or is rose pellets some sort of Aussie tradition that i have not yet been introduced?

speaking of flower petals, around here in the spring normally we have the blossomtime festival. https://blossomtimefestival.org/
CANCELLED. https://www.heraldpalladium.com/new...cle_2f86ff03-8091-5d75-b32b-5089c1a5693f.html
of course the blooms will still be coming out and the fruit trees and the grape vines all need to be tended...
then, in case you prefer tulips, run up to holland michigan to enjoy the tuplip festival (my dutch M5 bikes like to be ridden there for nostalgia) https://tuliptime.com/
CANCELLED. https://tuliptime.com/blog/archives/2020/03/16/holland-tulip-time-cancels-2020festival

and yesterday they cancelled the SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP https://www.srpgachampionship.com/ no flowers involved, but still....

the Michigan event is NOT cancelled (at this time)

as for the frankentrike the trike is not supposed to tilt. tilt mechanisms are super cool, but i am not sure they are worth all of the weight just to improve cornering. this was going to be a tilt, but i changed my mind. i have another tilt project going but this is really just about being a fixed delta mbbfwd. the tilt comes in cornering becuase this is a soft tail, and the rear swing arm is only attached at the shock mount and the arm pivot. the bike was never meant to be a trike, so it flexes thru the joint, the shock and the rear arm. the rear axle is attached quite simply and securely. i wanted to be able to use it as a convertible. the thing is frighteningly difficult to ride as a two wheeler, so i decided last night to replace the entire rear arm and make it a hard tail.

my first try this weekend will be to make an aluminum spine and then extend stays back to the axle and fasten them with tube clamps. i want the wheelbase a little shorter than the swing arm had it, so the tires are right behind the seat.

finally, today's ride in was warmer as it is in the mid 30's and no wind. however, i had my left calf cramp up at about 5 miles, and spin feathered it in the rest of the way on one leg power. i figured if i stopped it would hurt more and i would have to sit or lie down or i could just one leg it in and hope it cleared or didn't seize up completely. hopefully this evening will not be a repeat.

Soft Rose PETALS, that grew on plants, as pellets are from guns, which don't have many of here in the Peaceful Land Down Under,!!!!!

Mother Natural does not stop for any human virus, ONLY Climate Change!!!

If a non tilting Delta, then the weight on each wheel should be 33% , with a max of 40% for each rear wheel, so the C of G is further towards the base of the triangle, so more stable!
https://www.quora.com/Is-a-tadpole-...ble-and-easier-to-steer-than-a-delta-tricycle

The side loads on 700 c wheels will be high if cornering on two wheels like for a tadpole trike.
Tilt an Aluminium 700c wheel over at 45 degrees, resting on a bathroom scale, holding the top and apply foot load to the axle until 10 kg load shown on the bathroom scales, and look how much the wheel has distorted!!!
I think two 26" 32 spoked rear wheels would be better, IF you want to go on two wheels when cornering!!!

If the two rear wheels are ONLY to stabilise you at low speed, and you don't corner fast, the the existing 700c would be ok, as they look great!

@benphyr I made it home after work, but I will admit I made no effort. It was warmer with a headwind, but mostly it was Friday. No troops, no coast guard, all is well.

okay so it was 28 degrees when i left the house today into a slight headwind. two improvements: 1.wore 2 sets of gloves. perfect. 2. did not hook wahoo on. i still logged the ride, but did it on the watch and kept the watch covered. point of the exercise was to covert in my brain that not every ride must be faster than the last ride. so i just rode at a lower rpm and did not succumb to the temptation of hammering it. i admit it i do have a short term goal on my average speed to and fro, but for now, i think i have convinced myself to just ride steady and enjoy it. the difference appears to be about 2 mph. i suspect with increased fitness and better weather that 2 mph will disappear.

there was a little sheen when i looked out the window, so i waited another 20 minutes before leaving, and that was enough for the sun to hit the pavement.

rain off and on today so no commute.

hope to work on the frankentrike tonight, so hope to have a good post tomorrow.

@super slim i think that's what Bill Clinton said or something to that effect....

no pictures for frankentrike as didn't get time to work on it.

as for rides, no ride today either as it is still wet supposed to rain during commute home and dense fog.

here is Monday's ride home. no pictures, but data logged.

and for todays shameless self interested plug, here is the website for buying my son's shirts online:

Since we are in lock down, he can't go to school, and can't go to work, and has already conquered most of his video games. he is doing stuff to be amused and generate a little cash. this is his e commerce experiment. i am trying to get him to do some more slogans, but i think he is going to launch an Instagram experiment and then use that platform. everyone feel free to buy a shirt or hoodie, as that will reduce my burden when he goes to college next year.

well no pictures today and no rides. gale warnings, and the prospect of rain/snow later in the pm. and while i did work on frankentrike last night, the pictures i took disappeared from my phone so i have nothing to show from it.

But! not to let you all down from wondering what kind of crazy other crap i work on, here is a picture of my expedition set up in winter back road mode. yes that is a 3 x 26 set of studded marathons. i also have a wind wrap fairing that i usually have on this as well. putting the 26" up front changed the caster pretty dramatically, so it take a little more to steer it and the seat angle changed, as is the CG, and the turning radium is reduced and the penalty on the hands is quite painful as the studs just chunk pieces out of your hands. but it will go down un-plowed back roads quite well. this is set up as a digger not a floater. my favorite use for in this config is when it is late at night or early in the morning, and we have had a good snow and one one has wrecked it yet by plowing. super quiet and pristine. one small issue is that i end up riding alone ( and hence if i have packed an adult beverage, drinking alone) because no one else around me is stupid enough to set up their trikes like this.

How do the 26" wheels handle corners at high speed and side loads????
Can you fit a FAT rear tyre and wheel?

3bs

whereabouts unknown
Not a true fat. You can go wider but not giant.

Cornering is fine like a pickup truck. If you want to go really fast and do big cornering, it's probably not a snowy day and you have the wrong wheel tire set on. I built these up after riding a fat trike and concluding the are really cool but not something I would really use in a manner different from medium width studded knobies. Snow under a foot on firm grind. With Summer tires I don't like the set up much. Very nice for straights not fun for turns.

no commute ride today. big wind, gusts to 55, and waves 10-15 feet.

so here is the updated frankentrike.

i did a simple aluminum rear structure to remove the shock and the swing arm. it is now a fixed delta. i still have not constructed the rear disc brake mounts or the joint cable pull. i may just rig a single in back. i don't really like the handle bar set up yet either, but i will have to ride it more to decide what to replace it with.

the chain line is short, it cannot really manage a 2x anything. i tried. oh i tried. changes front rings, change rear cassette, changed mech locations, custom bent the front mech, everything. total fail. So after these pictures were taken, i converted to 1x11. 65 front ring 11-36 rear cassette. using a friction shiftier for now. still running -12 rear camber, 0 caster, 0 toe. the rear section appears to be sufficiently stiff, but i am do some angled braces from the top seat mount to the outer points on the rear axle tube. i have some flat stock i can trough.

so, no ride to work today. snow. okay i know, i ride in the snow for fun all the time, but i just don't feel like commuting in it.

more work on the frankentrike. after playing around with the drive line, i made a few more changes. the thing runs better on an 11-36 10 speed cassette over the 11 speed, but i left the 11 speed chain. gives a little more room. oh and the front ring is actually 64, not 65. i put in a small chain keeper on the inside of the ring so it will not jump off in first gear. yes the deflection is that extreme.

i went with a single rear disc brake, right side. i don't think it will need two rear brakes. i put it on the right side so that if it pulls for any reason when i don't expect it to, it will pull me right and away from traffic (unless i am in Australia, japan or the uk, where i will die in a head on. i may change discs to a wider disc. when the weather clears i will ride it further than my street and see if i need the angle stiffeners in back.

with the 451 wheel in front, the gearing of the 64/11 is not as good as the 53/11 on 700c of my v20 about 3.5 mph slower at 80 rpm but at 90 rpm i still am over 30 mph, which is fine. the 64/36 is not quite as low as my 34/36, but not horrible, so i think it will climb pretty well.

no. i did not ride in today. snow. this week 2 days of winds over 20 with rain, and 3 days snow. welcome to michigan.

i did finish the disc brake set up on frankentrike, and ran it up and down the driveway in the dark shifts well front brake is very good, rear brake still needs adjusting. i am using an old shimano brake handle set, and i can remember how to take the take up out of the thing....does anyone remember? i may also just put a multiplayer on it if i cant remember how. i think i have one in my bin. also still dont like the handlebar config. i think i will try rotating first.

oh and i did start my doodle job on the T-50. for full disclosure, i will probably have to label it somewhere" "inspired by Jack Daniels"
