today's covid 19 antique motorcycle moment is a jump to more modern times but to a little bit of ww2 history and returning to single cylinders. ify ou want an accurate history look it up but here is what i generally recall. this bike is one of the group generically called hummers. based on the dkw single, this intellectual property was a spoil of world war 2 to the winners from the Germans. The British, the Russians, the Americans and maybe the french all got rights and made bikes on this design. it is a two stroke single. they are called hummers because there was a dealer that sold a bunch of these and dressed them up special. but they are not all actually hummers, but thats what everyone seems to call them. as i recall they were originally called 125's then 165's, and then hummer's bikes were called hummers. then came the super 10 and then came the pacer scat and ranger. this is a 1962 scat. the scat was based on the pacer which was a pure street bike. made from 1962–1965. there were 3 basics. the pacer, the scat and the pure off road ranger. The Scat was a dual-purpose motorcycle. It had a high front fender and handlebars, softer seat springs, high-mounted exhaust pipe, and street-legal knobies. The big rear ring from the Ranger was available on the Scat as an option. then after all of these was the bobcat, and that was the endof the line. i have both a scat seat and a pacer seat. this bike i found in iowa restored by a guy who was a "hummer" specialist. he was dying of cancer and restored 3, one for each grandkid, (who sadly did not share his enthusiasm for the bikes or appreciate the gesture.) he had an authentic hummer that he had pained lime green with nickel plating. the bike actually glowed. i just couldn't afford it.
todays ride in was cold but little else. there is a great section of road with a slight downhill that is concrete and i can usually fly on, but it has so many chuckholes from winter on the edges of the slabs that i cant see being recumbent that i am too afraid to hammer thru there. and of course first thing in the morning is not really a big power ride moment for me, even waiting until light to go in.
the newly mounted old style tailbox is great, no more crap in my pockets,i used an original headrest bracket but put my big mount for the adjustable headrest on thinking i will try a headrest again this year. the box does buzz a little, so i will need some little pads here and there between the top and body of the box. the conversion back to 2x10 using a rival brifter and force everything else is now complete and effective. i need to back the brake leaver out a little. top gear is 53x11 and bottom is 34x36.
