Would folks familiar with that area expect facilities (including roads) to be less crowded after Labor Day (9/7)? My impression from going to the Traverse City area (north a ways) many times in summer and fall is that the glut of tourists dies out quickly starting in late August and is very much over after Labor Day. The primary schedule driver should be to allow the most folks to attend, but a secondary driver (for me anyway) would be to avoid the swarms of tourists who flock to that area during the peak summer months. Just a thought ...

Also, many thanks to 3bs and Benphyr for their efforts organizing this. I'm pretty jazzed at the prospect of this coming together!

Cheers,

-Jack

For the roads, I don't think before / after Labor Day would make a big difference in how busy the back roads would be, which is I assume where we would be riding.

The drop in tourism is most notable in the northwestern part of the mitten, so riding won’t be much of an issue. Lodging availability and pricing could be an issue, but not a deal-breaker.

kalhaven from south haven trailhead to kalamazoo trailhead is about 34 miles each way. this is a rail trail, so if you want to ride shorter, literally you just turn around. there are also little towns along the way so you can stop, get an icecream or a sandwich or a brew and then putter back at your lesiure. the south haven trailhead is a short ride to the downtown and the beach. south haven is harbor town. great little maritime museum, and plenty of food and drink.
steelhead route is 55. this is a lasso loop, so again there are some strategic turn around points. the starting point is klock park so you are at the beach, and also in the middle of a top level golf course, and a short ride to a good tavern on the water and a great burger place and a couple micro brewerys as well as downtown st joe and its stuff.
watermark pints usualy have a three distances based on three speed groups. i think the short ride is like 10 casual, and i think the fast guys do 20-25.
from three oaks, the routes are a bunch of loops, so you can actually do a bunch of short loops until you hit your number also a good distillery nearby and other stuff. also a ride from there to new buffalo is a great ride to the lake and a great hamburger joint or a nicer place on the harbor

keep in mind these are just choices of mine. there are also the trails that run from niles to south bend and notre dame and mishawaka. if we go a little north we get all of the ottawa county MUPs

as far a road traffic goes, the kal haven is all rail trail. the steelhead route uses a lot of m63 which is a state highway with a 8 foot shoulder and is a heavily ridden road even though it is a 55 mph road. i ride it every day on both cb and trike. people expect there to be bikes on this road. on the side roads, if you are on the steel head route so many people ride it for practice its expected to have bikes on it.

in terms of camping, my first suggestion is to camp at van buren state park. this is on the lake and also on the paved portion of the vanburen trail which ties into the kalhaven trail. no cabins here but campsites.
if you are looking for cabins and campsites, the KOA on coloma road has cabins and campsites, and is about a mile east of m63 which is a part of the steelhead route. but there is also cabin camping south county and warren dunes state park has standard campsites and some decent sized sand dunes on the big lake. south haven has several cabin campsite campgrounds.

also this area is replete with hotels of all levels, b&b's and vacation rental houses, so as soon as we set a date, i suggest people get reservations.

i have no new information on my work schedule for the ideal weekend. i may know more end of this month.

@3bs Do you think we can/should set a date? My work is pretty inflexible so I need to start planning my summer sooner rather than later. It sounds like your schedule may be fairly demanding and a little more last minute than mine.

It looks like July 25 would be best for everyone except myself (benphyr) and maybe MatthewFy whereas August 8 would be best for everyone except you (3bs). Any brilliant suggestions? We could divide and conquer each leading one date but we would each have a smaller group, it would be twice as much planning, and I wouldn't get to meet you.

I will know more next week. I am hoping my work thing clears, and we can use aug date, but just don’t know yet.
But that’s just for my benefit. If I can’t do it I would still tell the rest to do it as it would be a lot of people and it’s all easy and close

I can be there Thursday through Sunday, but have to leave Sunday afternoon.

I'll second Woodguy's reply ... I’m in. Any days that work for everyone else, I can make work.

As it happens, Aug 7, 2020 is a major birthday for me. If there's a pub anywhere within riding distance I'll likely be there the night of the 7'th to toast life with a pint or two. There's nothing I'd rather be doing on that b-day weekend than enjoying some riding and socializing on the coast of Lake MI. For anyone who hasn't ridden in that area before, you're in for a treat. The weather that time of year is generally really nice (though a month later is even nicer) and Lake MI is basically a freshwater sea -- by surface area the largest lake on earth, if I remember right.

Really looking forward to this outing!

@velocio jack. its not a matter of if there is a watering hole within riding distance, but rather which one you want to ride to.

for example. taste. http://www.tastesouthhaven.com/ the kal haven trail as it winds through south haven goes right by here. the parking lot is a block away. often we stop here after and eat and drink. it is a short roll to the beach. and there are a few other places literally within a couple blocks.

or planks. https://www.harborshoresresort.com/the-inn/planks-tavern a short roll from the parking lot at klock park where we would start and end the steelhead ride. or we could just start from there for that matter.

or north pier brewing http://northpierbrewing.com/ or across the street i prefer https://www.northshoreinnburgers.com/ becuase i dont really drink beer. this is on the paved trails for the golf course that we ride our trikes on to amuse ourselves with twists and turns and the like.

so, now i need to know what accommodations people want so i can make reccomendations. camping? motor lodge? hotel? suites hotel? VRBO?

I don't drink large quantities of beer, but really enjoy sampling the local good brew when I travel. After a day of riding in that area a Bell's Oberon or Atwater Dirty Blonde sounds like just the thing. To quote Homer Simpson, sort of, "Jack no function beer well without". ;)

As I mentioned before I'll be camping. But I don't expect that to be a popular option, so I'm happy to "do my own thing" wrt lodging. My intent is to use this Cruzbike event to kick off a week+ of loaded touring on MI's left coast. Hopefully a recumbent riding pal will be joining me for this adventure. If he comes along he'll be astride a Bacchetta Giro, but hopefully we're a big enough tent to look past his sorry selection of velocipede.

@velocio

here are a few of that make some sense. starting north to south

van buren is at the head of the van buren trail which goes to the kal haven. it is also between south haven and st joe just off m63. this is good for all rides except the sunday rides which i expect are the south county rides.

https://www.michigan.org/property/van-buren-state-park

the koa on coloma road is north of st joe and south of van buren.

https://koa.com/campgrounds/coloma/

weko is north of warren dunes

https://www.michigan.org/property/weko-beach-park-campground

warren dunes is also a great camping park aka tower hill this is good for south county rides

I could do either a hotel, motor lodge or a cabin at a campground (not going to tent). It will probably be nice if we all stayed in basically the same area to meet up for rides, meals etc. not sure how to coordinate that.

I also prefer non-camping (for my family sake) unless it is in someone's back yard - then it is fine because the living room can become a back-up in case of rain, cranky children, garbage trucks, excessive heat, formidable flatulence, etc. But cabin would be great for me/us depending on how it plays out.
