New V20 build components

Nope, you read it correct... I had a huge cassette on there for some pretty steep hills. It was over-kill, because I never needed to get into that big rear cassette ring... I've been considering changing my cassette again and just go smaller, because I typically stay in the big ring up front (except for steeper hills) and could use a smaller (10t or even 9t) cog in the cassette...

My S40 has an 1x11 speed. The cassette is 9x46T! I just got it and have had to change cables and make adjustments, so am getting used to it...

I'm not a little guy, so coming down some of these hills means I'm doing 50+ MPH!!! This is why I would probably have opted for disk brakes were I to start over...

Blessings,
Rudy

Hi Rudy - what chainring are you running with that 32t?

Trans-Am, How is the AXS system working for you? I just came across a used but in a near new condition 12s Sram X01 Eagle AXS upgrade kit at an LBS and considering it. Now I am researching the compatibility with my Shimano 105 R7000 52/34 cranks, but also if I can go with Sram's XG-1250 12S 10-36T instead of the AXS 10-50T or 10-52T cassette.

Edit: Swapped the small chain ring to a 34T from a 36T.
Edit 2: Just found the compatibility chart.

The Eagle 1x AXS works OK. The big deraileur can more easily bend the soft hangar, but that's a minor issue. The tradeoff with 1x drive is 2t jumps. But I could not imagine running a 10-36t 1x, even if it was compatible (I don't think it is). The cranks don't matter as long as they can take an 11s or 12s chainring.

I remember back a couple years ago, when 3T put its pro team on its Strada 1x13 bikes. Even with that extra cog and pro-level legs, many of the riders complained about the gearing--not enough low end for steeper climbing, not enough high end for sprints, and a few awkward spots in between, due to 2t jumps. Short of a 14, or even 15 cog cassette (yikes!), or some drivetrain transmission redesign, I think the V will continue to need the front derailleur for anyone who plans to tap into its potential.

The 52/34 I have works fine with the 11-28t for the easy and short climbs I currently do, and I even have a 12-30t which would make it a smidge better climber. For endurance races I'd need a GS cage RD to accommodate anything above a 30t which is pretty easy for me to get. My longest and highest climb on a 52/36 with an 11-28t was a total of 1500m in about 50km and on a few of the steeper parts I was wishing for another gear to drop down into. I didn't go below 6kph and didn't need to get off and push, but I need to find out just how big I need to go for on what is most likely going to be longer and steeper climbs for about a week. Since I dropped from a 36t to a 34t on the front small ring I am wondering if changing the rear cassette from an 11-28t to a 12-32t be enough for a week through the mountains or should I go up to a 34t or 36?
