Tubeless tires anyone?

I ride with 25mm Schwalbe Pro One tires with TruckerCo Cream at a pressure of 75 psi. This is about 15 psi lower than I used a couple of years ago. A lot more comfortable ride.

I am riding 32mm Conti GP 5000 TL between 40 and 50 psi. They ride is more comfortable at 40, but I worry a little about damaging the rims on a sharp edged pot hole.

I have the same setup except mine is set around 60psi. I didn't know I can make it less! I will try 45 psi next time. Thanks!

I worked down slowly to make sure that my tires were secure on the wheels. I have Vision Team 30 wheels and they grip the tires really well. Make sure your tires don’t squish or roll sideways. Be comfortable and safe.

How do I interpret the wear dots on my GP5000TL tires.

I have about 2000 miles on the tires. The two dots are both still visible. One for is deeper than the other.

Do I change the tires when the shallower dot disappears? Or is it safe to operate until both dots disappear?

Thanks for any help.

While you are waiting for an answer from more knowlegable folks than myself.

Can I ask how you like the GP5000TL's? How would you compare them to other tires you have used?

I am thinking of using the 28mm GP5000TL's on my next build, so highly interested.

These are my first ever tubeless tires. These are my first ever 622 wheels. So I don’t have any direct comparisons.

I love them. They have good grip and are seem to be fast.

I am running 32mm wide tires. I have run as low as 45psi, but have been running 60 psi lately because of concern with sharp edged bumps that I have noticed on my rides. The Continental site says the minimum pressure is 67psi, but with my wheels I have not had any issues at lower pressures.

John Schlitter put them on the wheels and got them to seat with a hand pump. I haven’t taken them off the wheels yet. So I don’t have personal experience with how easy they are to mount or dismount. I was thinking about rotating them, but the wear on both seems to be about the same. So, I chose not to rotate them.

For me it depends on season. Generally you can safely wear through the first dot and then replace the tire when the second dot starts to lose definition. If I lose the first dot in October and am heading into winter riding season I replace the tire. Way more junk on the road in winter so I like to have a little more rubber between me and the pavement. If the first dot disappears in April or May I tend to ride until the second dot also disappears . . . or until I find a new set of tires on sale. A very scientific system!

Just curious, are the 622 wheels specifically designed for tubeless tires?

I am using Vision Team 30 Disc wheels that are the standard wheels on the Schlitter Freestyle. The Vision website says that they are Tubeless Ready.

Ah, OK. I was wondering whether you were using tubeless tires on wheels that were not designed for them. Some people tell me that I could make it work, but others warned me not to try it, as they can easily separate from the rim.

Good to hear that John Schlitter is still in business. I bought my first recumbent from him years ago, and he struck me as a very honest guy. Not something I can say about most other shops in my area, unfortunately.

Mark, I have Cont 5000 TL 32mm tires on 700c wheels. I don't ride them hard, so can't really tell the difference from my gravel wheels' Schwalbe G One Allaround. Less noisy for sure. Seems to grip the road very well.
The shop guy did tell me the Cont 5000 were a real pain to put on when I picked them up. :- )

I can attest to the 5000s being tough to mount. Very grippy on the road. Hoping I don’t have to fix a flat on the road for at least 1000 miles. Hopefully they will have stretched a bit.

I recently mounted 28mm Conti 5000TL's on my Vendetta.
I had to use a compressor to get the initial seating.
I'm using Trucker Co sealant.
These are my 3rd set of tubeless tires.
They ride really good with a bit more comfort than the 25mm Pro Ones they replaced.
So far at 300 miles they seem to lose about 10lbs per day in pressure.
I have FLO aluminum rims.
I laced them up to my original hubs and they replace the original rims with the Cruzbike decals using the original bladed spokes.
I doubt there is much advantage that a 75 year old rider like myself would gain from a set of expensive carbon wheels :p

Update on the Conti 5000 - tubed.

Sidewalls seem to be a bit of an Achilles heel. I have so far (500 miles or so) had 2 flats, one front and one rear. Both result of catching a ragged pavement seam about 3” wide and 1-2” deep. Not something you want to hit on purpose but feel after thousands of miles on 4000s that they would routinely handle this kind of thing. Sure, it’s not a double blind, highly replicated test..just one guy’s observation.

I am riding a rear wheel drive Schlitter Freestyle. I checked today, and my rear tire had worn through both wear indicators on my 32mm Conti 5000TL. There were a few minor cuts but no obvious holes that needed to be sealed.

My front tire has some life left in it, but I decided to change both and keep it for a spare.

My experience with the Vision Team 30 disk wheels that I am using was that the tires could be mounted by hand with very little strength required.

After applying soapy water between the bead and the rim, I was able to get the tire to seat and hold air with just an ordinary hand pump. The final seating was not even a loud pop as it seamed to push up against the rim on one spot and then continue around the rim.

I know the experience is reported as being much more difficult on other rims, but there are tubeless ready rims that make it easy with this tire.

I aired up each tire 3 times. Once with the valve core removed and no sealant. This seated the tires the first time. Even though the seal relaxed after the pump was removed, it seamed to seat quite easily each time after that. The second time was with the valve core and no sealant. In this state, I could pump it up to a higher pressure and have confidence that I could get it to seal with the valve core in place. Then I removed the core, added sealant (opened my bottle of Trucker Co Cream II for the first time), replaced core and pumped up for the last time.
Next time I will use new valve cores and skip one of the first two pumping events.

This was my first time installing tubeless tires and I was happy that it went pretty smoothly.

I flatted the other day with a large screw. I think the front wheel lifted it out of the tar-chip road surfacing (common in this area) and set it up for the Schwalbe. Through the bottom and out the side. I tried three plugs, but it wouldn’t hold more than 30 psi, even with the sealant, so time to put in a tube. Total down time less than fifteen minutes. The rest of the day went well, and I took a nice picture, too.

Michael,
Are you running GP 5000 TL 32mm on a Vendetta? I am running GP 5000 TL 28mm on Marvic 700cc 19mm inter width wheels and it looks like I could go 3 - 4 mm larger, but I haven't found anyone on this site that has confirmed they can run the 32's.
