    High Speed Turns

I used to race weekly on a DF on a 1.75 mile racetrack that had hills and curves for 35-mile to 42-mile races. Sometimes it would rain during a race, and the track would get very slippery from oil and rubber, since it was a regular racetrack any other time. I found that I could handle the wet...

    The Hills of Cincinnati

Abbott, It looks like you'll be doing Calvin's 12 Hour Challenge now that you live within 80 miles of it. The Larry of Oz will be very happy!

    I'll just hop that curb!

And by the way, regarding ODRAM engine fuel (for what it's worth) for 151 hard miles: Breakfast at 5:30 AM: protein shake, cliff bar, small Starbucks frapp to wake up after too little sleep. 8:39 AM: On the road finally after waiting for a huge rainstorm (coming off Lake Michigan) to let up...

    I'll just hop that curb!

I did the ODRAM today - solo (no drafting). It ended up being 151 miles, not 143. So I didn't break the 7-hour barrier. But I was hoping to do a 20.5 mph average and ended up with a 20.8 mph average according to my Garmin (which is slightly different than Strava). So I'm happy with 151 miles in...

    Core temperature

I remember reading in a textbook about studies done with slushies. They drop the core temp very quickly, which greatly improves performance. But you have to drink it, not pour it down your shorts. :)

    I'll just hop that curb!

Well, I pulled the pin on a brand new wheelset purchase. My old set was pretty worn out from many, many miles of abuse and, most recently, taking on a curb head-on at speed. If I had known the difference in feel (not to mention "style") would be so dramatic, I would have purchased a new set...

Hitting the road for a while

I cramped so badly at my first N24HC in 2007 that I couldn't get off my bike because the quads in both legs locked up tight. It was really hot and I was over 100 miles. So, being my own lab rat... This year, my third N24HC, it was 96 degrees all day, competitors, friends, and supervillains...

    I'll just hop that curb!

Tire and tube are in the trash. Rim has been bent back. Most of the evidence has been destroyed.

    I'll just hop that curb!

    That's a difficult decision.

    I'll just hop that curb!

Don't know the speed, but I was accelerating. Wheel is functional after a trip to a bike shop, a truing, and some rim bending - but it will need replacing. I came to an abrupt stop, did not go over the bars, did not do a reverse wheelie, did not fall over. Just heard a gunshot-like sound...

    I'll just hop that curb!

I was out with a really fast group of guys on Tuesday. It was my first time riding with this group. They are a really friendly bunch, and fast. Recumbent? No problem! So, toward the end of the ride, only a few quick miles from the shop, I was out front and didn't know I should hop on the bike...

    Riding with DF groups

What Lief said, plus: On the Saturday ride, I like to arrive late so I can go really fast to catch the group. Then later, I'll go out front and pull for a while at a pace that I can stand for a few miles. The guys behind me will get some draft, but they can only last so long, so they will end...

    Q ring upgrade - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh......

For anyone who's interested, here is a super easy method of tuning an elliptical chain ring. I realized that I could tune mine this way after finding the holes too complicated for my taste. This is based on my mechanical advantage theory. I realized this last year and it has worked ever since...

    Q ring upgrade - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh......

Me too! Now I won't be able to rest until I get a new, small chain ring.

    Q ring upgrade - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh......

Ratz, In trying to get to the bottom of the non-round chainring effect, here are some additional thoughts. I have to think this through by writing it out. And some thought experiments may also be required. This is rather lengthy, so schedule some vacation time now before you continue. You...

    Q ring upgrade - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh......

Ratz, I (somewhat) disagree. I've been thinking about this and trying to imagine how it all works. Someday, if I have time, an accurate mathematical model would prove it once and for all (any math nerd volunteers?). The main benefit of short crank arms is to eliminate the extreme bend of the...

    Q ring upgrade - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh......

You could find out by building a mathematical model. The difficult part would be determining the mechanical advantage of your legs as the angle goes from about 90 degees to almost 180, such as tendon attachments and bone lengths, etc. Then add in the torque as the force on your crank arm changes...

    Want to buy a Silvio

I second the motion for Zenni Optical. I've used them before with great quality and very low cost.
