Chain WAXing (yes it's that easy) - and other mysteries of this art!

I know I've waited too long if the chain is noisy. Swapping out the used chain with a freshly waxed chain makes the drivetrain work silently again. So, normally, I'll swap chains before the drivetrain becomes noisy.

    Kask bambino helmet

I use the Giro Air Attack Shield, which is similar looking to the Kask. And yes, I think it helps.

Drill Venting Holes in the Carbon Soles of you Shoes?

I was getting hot foot and found that the sole in the Specialized shoes has a hump that is supposed to spread out the metatarsals, but it just causes hot foot on long rides from the uneven pressure. Then, after changing soles, the three cleat screws in each shoe were poking my feet, so I had to...

    Finally - My sub-4 hour Century - totally fuel-less!

Nice work Larry! Three weeks ago, I went over 97 miles (on a century ride) with no food or drink. I felt fine until then, when I got a little thirsty, so I drank some Infinit and was back to normal.

    Early Days

Mirrors? An absolute necessity, in my opinion. It's the only way to protect yourself from texters, drunks, and those trying to teach you a lesson. And be patient regarding learning to ride. Your brain has to adapt, which only comes with time and practice. You might get frustrated and bruised...

$10,000 prize race for a cause-Emmitt Smith Grand Fondo

Go Larry, go! You could offer to reimburse your sponsors and add a little profit if you win, that would encourage bigger investments. Like say, double or nothing. You could also try to get CruzBike to sponsor you and then split the profits.

    Falling over

Unclip before you slow down, then brake quickly, put your feet on the ground and stand up as you stop. To take off again, take a couple of steps to get rolling, slide down in the seat, attach your feet to the pedals, and start pedaling. It feels good to take advantage, on long rides, to stand...

    Testing Dérailleur Pulleys

There was a guy at N24HC who lost credit for the whole last loop of 7.6 miles by arriving at the finish line only a few seconds late. Assuming he rode 22 hours out of 24, he would have arrived at the finish line with about 2 full minutes to spare if he used better pulleys with a 6 second per...

Diet: Low Carb and Ultra Cycling

Sounds good to me. I train without food or water, even in the heat. Then I eat and drink potato chips, diet Coke, Starbucks Frappacinos, and Infinit during races or events. I burn lots of fat for energy and have a high heat tolerance through adaptation.

To chamois, or not to chamois, that is the question

I still wear my team-issued bibshorts with chamois and a little Chamois Butt'r to prevent friction burns on longer rides. I have found no reason to change. And then, what Rick said about modesty also applies.

    Getting Off the Fence

I rode Mavic Ksyrium wheels for about ten years. Last fall, I had to replace the bearings finally. The only time I needed a truing was when my derailleur went into the spokes, damaging some of them. Or when I went head-on into a concrete curb. They're not heavy, and are almost bulletproof...

2016 Mid-Atl Century reports and videos

I've raced with Larry in person. I can testify that he is 105 years old, under three feet tall, and is not allowed on any roller coasters for both reasons - hence the purposeful crashing to get his adrenaline "fix". He also rides blindfolded and steers by sonar and smell alone.

I was thinking about rear steering also, but didn't think it would handle as well as it appears in the video. Very impressive. I wonder how well it handles curb hopping.
