Battle of the Brands - Bike Sebring 2020

I have been riding Continental Contact Speed (50-559) tires to help deal with Michigan’s rough roads.

Are the roads for this ride smooth enough so that I should invest in a faster tire?

Would a Continental Grand Prix in 28-559 be a worthwhile upgrade?
yes. imho

OK - I am in - I just signed up for the Battle of the Brands too I will do the 12-hour (and should be able to commit to at least 200 miles) - although I have my eye on the 60+ age-group record of 261..1 which I think is do-able if I have a good day.
Maria - What is the count now between the 2 brands?
Here is my training so far for the last 4 weeks of my "riding while working program" - You can tell the days I have to go into the office. Weekends are mostly non-ridings day devoted to house hunting.
My goal is to build up to riding 12 hours a day for 5 days straight during the week - then I figure 12 hours at Sebring will just like "another day at the office", except faster and with real wind in my face.
Zwift is a wonderful tool - Yes this is why I can't ride with the folks riding at night.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

@LarryOz that is disgusting: 12 hours a day for 5 days straight? Think of the smell - that alone is reason for you to be house hunting! :p All kidding aside, do you ever set goals that are achievable by mortals? 60hrs riding in one week is more than most work in a week and more than many sleep in a whole week! WOW. I think I'm going to have to fail at my goal to try to keep some balance in the world..

Or to put it another way: Most bears hibernate in winter but not Larrybear. You might think he's hibernating when there aren't (m)any posts from him for a while but again you'd be wrong - the gears are still turning - He's getting nowhere fast, getting there more zwiftly than you or I.

Well, I thought I was doing some good preparation for Sebring until I saw what @LarryOz is doing! I can only imagine being able to ride at about 19mph while working - for 10 hours a day. Very impressed Larry.

Look at all those screens Mrs O is using! Is she trading derivatives while she rides? Or is she a drone pilot?

I know you are not allowed to answer that.

Anyway, what are you doing taking pictures of your bike when you should be riding it? Not the way to get fit for Sebring! No slacking!

How many fans do you use, as your power output would be a lot higher!!!!!
Just one big fan. Mrs. O does not ride the trike setup. I ride it sometimes when she is not using the trike. More comfortable and upright than the Bent - but actually harder to make power on - at least for me - Maybe I don't have my Trike legs yet! haha

Unfortunately for me every week day is an 1o.5 hour office day for me + 30 to 45 minutes of commute each way so riding during the week is limited but I am getting into the 40 miles every other day range. weekends are now in the 100+ range if I can manage to get other activities out of the say. For instance I have to move my Saturday ride to Sunday this week because of a recumbent get together. Aiming for 180 miles on the trainer the Saturday before Sebring. Even with Zwift this training is getting extremely boring. Will muddle through and it will hopefully pay off in the end. I have a feeling I will be struggling to hit the 200 mile mark but will give it my best. I need to reorder my powdered fuel soon as I am going to run out before Sebring at this point just in training for it. At some point we need to have a discussion about strategy. Not Larry ripping our legs off and beating us with them strategy but for us new riders to Sebring we need to know how many miles it is from the start to the first opportunity to get fresh fuel. I like to have a game plan on these long rides.

I have a feeling that the final tally count of riders will probably have to wait till the 16th because I seem to remember reading that the 15th is the last day to sign up for the challenge so the current number could (will hopefully) go up.

Keep up the food work guys.

Now officially signed up for the century if anyone is counting. Now I just have to build my shipping box and hope Southwest Airlines is good on their word! Would hate to get to the airport and have to steal a whole plane just to get my bike to Florida!

Larry, you are a constant source of amazement. We just stay outside all year long here in Houston. Had a fun ride last Saturday holding the bike up in crosswinds gusting to 30 mph, and that was with a wheel cover on the back. The bike is so balanced it just leans over before I know what hits me, but it still holds a straight line. Got a little dicey going across some muddy road but what a joy it is to punch through a strong headwind at a low heartrate. Wishing Cruzbike great success at Sebring. I will make it perhaps next year in 2021 but my wife Cathy wants to plan a long driving vacation around it in advance because it is so far away.

I plan to use shipbikes.com to send my bike to the hotel in a box that is small enough to not be oversized. I am going down on Thursday so that I have plenty of time to put it together. I will repack it on Sunday and send it hone the same way. Hope that works out ok.

What’s the size of your box? And what model are you shipping?

I am shipping a T50 with a Thor seat in a box that will be 46x30x12. I might try to get it down to 29” tall to give me a little buffer against the limits. I am building a wooden frame to protect it and give me something to attach parts to. I’ll post pictures when it’s done. I am training on my trike on Sport Crafters rollers, so I can brake down the bike and pack it early. I packed it in my prototype a week ago. I am going to unpack and assemble to make sure I can do it with the tools I am taking along. Then, final packing. I will buy a box from Custom Box that fits snugly around the frame. It is a bit of a project and took a little trial and error to get an arrangement where it all fits. The biggest issue is that it will weigh about 60 lbs with about 40 lbs for bike and 20 lbs for packaging.

Way to do it. Go with a suicide vest and order them to take your bike, fully assembled, in with the passengers and go to the nearest airport to Sebring, and have a helicopter waiting for you there.

I will make it one day.

Daryl - I am sue with you training as you stated 200 will be very achievable - especially with how flat it is and with drafting.
Fueling is pretty easy on the 10 mile loop as you can get something fresh every 30 mins or so.
The 100mile loop crosses itself at about 25 & 75 miles and a nice place to hand-off, and you have the turnaround at around 50 miles - so it is really easy to get a new bottle every 25 miles or so - so even if you only carry 1 bottle it is very do-able.
My strategy is going to be to try and stay with the Century group and do as little work as possible. (Regrettably in the past when I have not been in the Century, they just did not even go fast enough for me and I ended up pulling them even though I was in the 12-hour. Mostly because they are playing their games to make it to the end of the Century with as much energy as possible so they can win the sprint.) Then there will be many opportunities to catch or wait for a group in the 10 mile route to draft with. I am hoping to make it through one 10 mile loop fast enough to hook up with other riders just coming in from the Century. I think the main strategy should be to always try and ride at least one other person at all times to take advantage of the draft. I think there will be 3 or 4 different groups of different speeds that pretty much anyone can find to ride with.
Glad you are planning on coming Daryl!
