Your Max Speed on a Cruzbike

43 mph -downhill, strong tailwind, spinning as hard and fast as I could on my highly modified Sofrider V1. Memories of road rash and splintered bones keep my top speeds in check.

    Squeaking on Silvio 1.5 - suggestions ?

I'm a retired mechanic, son of a diesel truck mechanic who was in turn son of steam engine mechanic. Which means nothing.... To amplify, those boom clamps can be torqued correctly and yet still squeak. Aluminum, aluminum oxide, paint... it all degrades and it's the debris accumulating under the...

    Squeaking on Silvio 1.5 - suggestions ?

My creaks are usually due to boom clamp issues. There's never anything visible, but after all of the parts are disassembled, cleaned, lightly lubed (I use spray-on furniture polish) and reassembled: No more squeaks. Good luck!

    I'll just hop that curb!

Not really... not any Cruzbike. Braking hard on a Sofrider will lift the rear wheel... like I used to do. Sofrider Stoppies are easy. Disc brakes are the future for good reason.

    I'll just hop that curb!

Dang Joe, you're brave. So: What wheel do you have in mind to replace the one you blew up?

    Slow Ride

Sunday ride. This was just my usual sprinting around, split between hills and flatter streets. Three big fat American vehicles tried to kill me. That's three times more than usual. One driver pulled over, stopped, opened his window and apologized! That never happens. The chain fell past the...

What did you do to your Cruzbike today?

The bullbar setup has not changed, but it is just a wee bit further away from me now than it was when this picture was taken last week. It was fine before; now it's finer. Why? More shoulder and core muscles involved with high-power (stop laughing!) riding & less reliance on the wimpier arm...

    Q ring upgrade - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh......

Wait a second: Using shorter crank arms means that your feet are spinning smaller-diameter circles through the air. Less turbulence is generated up front with short crank arms than is generated with long crank arms. Sorry. Continue!

What did you do to your Cruzbike today?

Yesterday I finally got around to filing the pivot cage to allow the pivot clamp to fit the hole it's finally in. The pivot bolt used to be in the next hole over; the previous owners used all the rest of the holes. This is made possible by rough surgery done by the previous owner who used a...

    Slow Ride

I also own two of those wicking things; they work really well. They get worn, alternately, under my Winter full-face helmet and the bargain full-of-vents height-of-Summer climbing helmet. I do not wear any headsweat skullcap or do-rag under my vented Schwinn. It cools better without any help and...

Why are road bumps so much more obtrusive on a recumbent?

Pinch flats irritate me more than flying water bottles and flying water bottles are pretty dang irritating. A more aerodynamic posture for mitigating the impact of bumps is to bridge. You know, lift your bum and lower back off of the seat: This is sort of the recumbent equivalent to standing...

    Slow Ride

This is my first adult helmet, a Schwinn Intercept. Of all three of my bike helmets, it's the oldest and still gets worn the most. -The full-face BMX bike helmet is the fastest, most aerodynamic and most effective of my helmets with the chin bar. It's also the warmest. -The three-dollar...

    Slow Ride

Fast Ride. Hey, my thread - my rules. The new seat convinced me that it's ready to rock, so I planned to ride for real this morning. Boy, did I ride. Yesterday afternoon, my new bike shoes arrived. The old shoes have served me well since '07 and show very little wear. Now they have found new...

New Seat For The V 1.5

Installed! The blond resin matches the Screaming Yellow paint pretty well. No flange on the edge of the seat ... looks good, feels good, works well and made it easier to build. The integrated neck rest -nonadjustable- fits me perfectly and the bike bag on the back works well. I found that the...

New Seat For The V 1.5

Went out to test ride my new balsa/'glass/epoxy composite seat, before the afternoon heat. First impression: Really buzzy ride. So buzzy that I can feel my teeth rattle in their sockets. Lower than stock, more aero too: Downhill speed and flat speed are improved. The buzzy ride will be...
