    Drivetrain Wizard

There's been a lot of discussion about drivetrains in the Silvio forum lately. I've discovered a drivetrain guru at VeloNews; who's done a lot of mixing and matching and swapping, and he has a lot of insight around 10 and 11-speed compatibility. A few minutes strolling through his FAQ...

May I remove the tab which holds the kickstand?

I think it's a little iffy... If it were a steel swingarm, I wouldn't be too concerned. It's aluminum, and that cross-plate adds rigidity. Aluminum structures don't distort much before they fail. To Andrew's point, if your bike is a Sofrider V1, there are steel swing arms out there...

Honey,,, a Sofrider followed me home,,, can I keep it ????

Nice bike... That looks like a Sofrider V2.1 - probably the best out-of-the-box machine we've built in terms of simplicity and versatility. It's one of my favorites; I still have one (which I modified, of course... ;) ) Cheers, Doug

Agreeing with Charles here... ... looking good indeed. Notice that using a rigid fork has lowered the bike's height in general - this is a good thing. If you have a vise, you can clamp the adapter brackets in it "face to face" and easily check them for parallelism - and gently bend...

    Vendetta bottom bracket thread

Nice, Martin! I have an affection for some of the older technologies, also. The beauty of what you've got there is that you can use modern ceramic ball bearings in that setup and get a really efficient bottom bracket that's light weight, low friction, and it will accept a broad range of...

    yet another Silvio build thread

25mm's should work very well... The only reason I'm not running them is they weren't available at the LBS when I built my Silvio 2.0. 28mm x 700c is the widest tire we can consistently run on the Silvio 2.0 - 2.1, because tire cross section variability can cause the tire to hit several...

fatbike 135mm front fork? fatbike 135mm front hub for rear wheel?

Bolting the chainstay to the fender tabs... ... will probably cause the bolts to interfere with the chain. You'll probably need to modify the triangle brackets or fabricate something. Id the fork aluminum or CroMo?

    Thinking about a Silvio 2

If issues arise, or to avoid them, You could buy a 10-speed crank and bearings and mount 9-speed chain rings on it... But I think it will work fine in any case, particularly if you are using friction shifting. The bearing shells need to be 44mm in diameter. SRAM Rival stuff seems to work...

fatbike 135mm front fork? fatbike 135mm front hub for rear wheel?

You've come this far... Go ahead and build it! You'll have one of the few conversions that can use disc brakes!

20" rim with 135mm OLD hub

Your best solution might be to have one built... Chris, That way you can match your Nuvinci wheel and get exactly what you want... Cheers, Doug

Y26 Progress (was My persistence in searching has borne fruit!)

Your approach is a good one... It's usually a good idea to hand-tight-fit things to see how they're going to go together. Shows up problems quickly. Adding washers to space out the rear locknuts is fine. You can also just pull the rear nuts up tight and compress the stays - it won't bother...

    New-to-me Silvio 1.0

My Silvio 1.0... ... uses a 3x10 Campy Comp Triple setup. Works fine. My only concern for you is that the 11 speed cassette may be wide enough to cause some challenges. I have some methods to get around these issues, contact me if you run into problems. Cheers, Doug

Trek rear swing arm is steel? It looks like it is, so the Trek rear axle should be the right length for a steel dropout and should work with the adapter brackets with no worries. What model is the alternate bike? Cheers, Doug

Y26 Progress (was My persistence in searching has borne fruit!)

Steering column I looked this bike up over at Trek. The spec sheet says it uses a 25.4mm (1-inch) steerer tube, although that one looks awfully like a 1 1/8" inch steerer. The conversion kit steering column is intended for a 1 1/8 inch fork steerer tube, and if that's what you have, it...

On my recent disapperance - Okay, not so recent.

Dear Folks, In the last 23 months I have been integral to building 3 factories in China, increasing their output by a factor of 10, and reducing their defect rates by a factor of 10. It has been the most fulfilling work of my career, working side by side with Chinese engineers, scientists...
